Set in the Rocky Mountains of Montana in the early 1900s, this is a tale of love, betrayal, and brotherhood. After being discharged, Colonel Ludlow decides to raise his three sons in the wilds of Montana, where they can grow up away from the government and society he has learned to dispise. The three brothers mature and seem to have an unbreakable bond, until Susanna enters their lives. When Samuel, the youngest of the three, returns from college he brings with him his beautiful fiance, Susanna. The eldest son, Alfred, soon finds himself in love with his brother's fiance, and things get worse when he discovers a growing passion between Susanna and Tristan. Colonel Ludlow's favorite son, Tristan is willful and as wild as the mountains. As the brothers set out to fight a war in Europe, suspicion and jelousy threatens to tear apart their once indestructable bond.

Normally love dramas do not interest me because I'm boring and predictable
. This film, while being more than "just" a good drama of love,
really impressed me. Many of the scenes are visually very beautiful, some
in cinematography, others on their content. As a love drama, is moving, and sometimes almost poetic
beautiful. These three men, brothers, who are all
in love with the same woman. She has a relationship with each of them,
but in the end she realizes that she loves only one of them. The plot is very good
, and evolves to the right rhythm for this type of story. Not terribly
fast, but never stops either. The actors all portray their respective characters
well, almost all of them giving a perfect performance.
Anthony Hopkins is great, as always. There was really nothing in this movie
that I am disappointed. The scene comes to ending some of the best cinematography
I've ever seen. There is a very emotional scene near the end
who is also one of the most visually beautiful I've ever seen in a movie.
I recommend this to most fans love dramas, and to a lesser extent, fans
tragedies of war. 8 / 10
The raw passion for this movie is enough to make any serious film fan
mourn. Frankly I can not believe this film was not nominated for about 8 or
10 Academy Awards. I am also puzzled that some people think that this was
Anthony Hopkins worst image. It was absolutely brilliant in this, as was
Brad Pitt. This was the film that made me take a look to see Pitt and
that he is more than just a pretty face. After seeing this, he became, and is
still to this day, my favorite actor. In this film was rustic, yet thoughtful
. He was strong and vulnerable. He had a great love for
family (especially his father) and for a woman who knew should not be theirs.
This epic film with a real history, talent, superior filmmaking and
most of all (and what many movies today lack) .. closure.
