Isabel and Clara are growing up in a time of terror. It is 1492, and Spain has decreed that all Jews must either convert to Catholicism, go into exile or face trial and execution. Although forcibly baptized, the sisters are chased through Christendom until they arrive in Venice. It is in this great maritime empire, where opulence rhymes with tolerance, that Isabel organizes secret passages for refugees fleeing the Inquisition while Clara falls in love with a Venetian noble, Paolo Zane. Isabel intends for her family to go to Istanbul, the only place where Jews can live freely, but Clara is reluctant to leave. She challenges Isabel's authority and is prepared to break her family ties and sacrifice her faith for love. Caught in this battle of wills is Clara's daughter, Victoria, who finds she is about to be married into the same faith that murdered her father.

I loved this movie. Among the most prominent: cinematography and scenes
Renaissance Venice, the delicate image of the Jews in hiding trying

Keep your faith, the superb performance of Isabel (Katherine Borowitz);
The
Quiet beauty and expressiveness of the young Victoria (what a wonderful

young actress Hannah Taylor-Gordon), and the intrigues of the plot that
Preserves one glued to the screen , waiting to see what happens next.
My only criticism is that there is a certain lack of clarity in what was happening

The plot peaked - both those on the glassmaker and

Sister emotional reactions to the other near the end. But the lack of clarity
also maintains a reflection on the film. In all, a disturbing film

recommend it.
I recently saw this movie on television in Greece. (Dec 06) As I had never
Hearing him speak before he was a real surprise. Great costumes, sets and
Color. The story keeps moving along and you had to pay attention.
At the end I felt that I wanted more. What happened next? Is there a
Sequel? Is it a series? The scenes in Venice were astonishing in their
Recreation at the time. Most of these players have never heard of
And I gather that this is a cast mainly from Europe. The credits are as fast
(In my TV) that I could not take what the co production of nationality
. Czecoslovakian? The historical aspects are very interesting and
echos Shakespeare was "The Merchant of Venice" on the road
the Venictian implemented its trade laws and the laws of contract.
Very Interesting. And yes beautifully filmed.
