(comedy)
Harish Kumar Patel lives with his mom and dad in Bhimnagar, Gujerat, India, where he is studying Electronic Engineering. His dad, Satish Kumar, wants him to re-locate to the U.S., live with the Bakshis, study, and marry the girl of his choice. Harish must first go through the blessings of an Astrologer, Bholey Shankar Maharaj, who blesses him, informs him that he will meet a girl whose name will start with "P", who he will marry. An overly excited Harish travels all the way to Houston, Texas, U.S. where he is met fondly by the Bakshi family, consisting of Mrs. and Dr. Bakshi, Mohan, and Deepu. In keeping with the fear and paranoia after the September 11 attacks, Mrs. Bakshi has made it a practice to place American flags in the front pockets of her sons, and she does it now for Harish as well. Mohan is around Harish's age and shows him around the campus. Harish meets with a beautiful Malyalee girl, Priya, and falls in love with her. But things do not go as planned when Harish finds out that Mohan actually is a snob, who hates F.O.Bs. (Fresh off the Boat) Indians like him; the girl Priya is actually in love with another young man by the name of Raju, and her name's not Priya - it's Supriya; and due to Harish's accent, oily hair, & c. he is not being invited to the party where everybody else is invited. Looks like Harish is headed for more pitfalls than he had bargained for, and it also looks like the Maharaj may have been wrong after all.

While I agree that much of this movie rehashes a lot of old stereotypes and cliches
, I do not feel that the film did or even mean-spiritedly
Without good intentions. It is not the moral of the story that all
Stereotypes and harsh feelings toward recent immigrants were wrong?
While there are points where some of the jokes or a plot lines were
Hokey or little cliché and totally exaggerated (for the love of God, no more
doctor / engineer jokes!), The I thought movie had some moments of
Very subtle, very astute analysis on the identity, race relations and
negotiations that it is "cool" and who is not. Granted, I am watching this film
for my master's thesis, so I look for all these subtle
Tacos, but if you look closely, you can see that there is much more to do in this film that
FOB jokes.
That said, the film is not perfect. , It gets really slow at points,
And as I said, many of the jokes are completely on the floor.
However, I thought that such Hari was sweet, likable character (
In fact he reminded me very much the main character in the movie "LOSER,"
That follows a fairly similar story line about a dorky mid-western
moved to New York for college), which made the movie worth seeing.
Despite all the shortcomings of this movie, I love that instead of seeing America
Desi (or a large number of American Desi type of movies) any day.
This is one of the few films of this type that does not have
totally uncritical approach to the "Indian" culture. This film actually took some time
looming in the fun in itself.
In my opinion, this film is much closer to the satire that virtually
Everything I have seen of its kind, and if you are looking for a movie to watch
within this genre This is probably the best option at this point
.
Bollywood films have grown a lot and are becoming increasingly dominant.
The problem is the standard Bollywood movie has to follow a strict formula
, with very little room for experimentation. This film appeared
To try to push some of those limits, but with little result. The
Plot line begins normal, the FOB is far from being credible.
His character would be an FOB India, the way they described. The
Characters are very plastic and predictable.
Music and dance scenes are nice, modern and fun. Support
characters are the best part of the film. This "game" is the
Nearly 1 / 3 of the film and nothing actually happens, leaving you waiting
To put an end to the traditional "big speech". When it arrives, is not
Sense, and if ANYONE can understand the point of his main character
dialogue in the "big speech", then send it to the production company
Inclusion the video jacket. It could raise the character of a notch or
Two. Fans of Bollywood is this media, fans of the comedy is
Forget that within hours and fans of the films that are below average.
