Desmond Doyle is devastated when his wife abandons their family on the day after Christmas. His unemployment and the fact that there is no woman in the house to care for the children, Evelyn, Dermot and Maurice, make it clear to the authorities that his is an untenable situation. The Catholic Church and the Irish courts decide to put the Doyle children into Church-run orphanages. Although a sympathetic judge assures Desmond that when his financial situation reverses, he will be able to get his children back; money is hard to come by. During that time, Evelyn and her brothers suffer the abuses of living in orphanages while Desmond struggles to secure finances. Now he must battle the courts to get his children back.

I just saw this movie on pay-per-view, and I thought it was charming.
Pierce Brosnan does a good job. So good to see him really get a chance to act
. And the cast, including Stephen Rea and Alan Bates,
is exceptional. The story is very credible and moving, probably because they are
basa on a true story. I wonder why this film, directed by Bruce Beresford
with talent, not significantly splashes when
released. You might have played in Austin, but I can not remember. Just shows how
marketing, or lack thereof, can make a movie disappear. It is a shame
not receive more attention. I recommend it wholeheartedly
.
I must admit, I was skeptical and anxious to see Pierce Brosnan in a
serious dramatic role. His characters are often very elegant and
have an air of superiority about them that makes it appear to be better than the rest of us
. I was pleasantly surprised to see his true to life performance as
Desmond Doyle, an unemployed father of two boys and a girl named Evelyn.
Evelyn is the largest of the three children and has a special bond with her father
which is the basis of the whole film. Pierce Brosnan has his
character with a delicacy and dedication in which the viewer completely forget what
Pierce Brosnan and start really believing that this is a documentary film
type and not a Hollywood production. As Pierce Brosnan
Irish birth is not surprising how well you can draw a moderate
Irish accent, but it is still a bit shocking taking into account how he seems
English is usually when you see on the screen. Stephen Rea, Alan Bates, Aidan Quinn and Juliana Margulies
complete the rest of the cast of adults and put all
in performances that are worthy of their talents. Juliana Margulies
be an American born actress is able to portray a woman with Irish accent
very convincing. This film is undoubtedly one of the best films of 2002
, it is regrettable that it was not widely known as a possible Oscar
favorite.
