I just see the premier of New York Inland Empire, and is so refreshing
once again be transported in a form only David Lynch can carry
someone. Inland Empire is Lynch at his best - funny, thoughtful,
mysterious, beautiful, dark, deeply disturbing and frightening in a way that
some horror films ever affected me. The film is a slow burn, taking his time
(about 3 hours), leaping across
realities and strange encounters, continually keeping the audience wondering what
reality they are experiencing, and what means reality.

Laura Dern gives an excellent performance as the motto of "girl
problems. "She goes to places that do not remember ever seeing her go, the
naive to the terrible, truly exposed. I heard
Lynch is campaigning for an Oscar for winking Ms. Dern, so maybe this is. She really
I flew away.

This film - like all of Lynch of effort - is not certainly
for everyone. It is vague, strange, jumps all over the place and sometimes
is deeply alarming (one of the few films in a long time to really
give me nightmares), but in my opinion, it is truly beautiful, < br> almost serene. If you like a linear, clear history, then
do not see this movie. If we do not linear, surrealist drama / horror, however,
then by all means go see. Lynch is independent producing this, so I know that
banking a lot of words of mouth of the Inland Empire to be
success. Help him. It is a fantastic film.
Inland Empire: that means Los Angeles, the place of Lynch inspiration, but also
the inward realm of the mind and dreams, surreal world
Lynch's imagination that inspired its unique visual poems. This
new job, three-hour, but unified by a wild and heartbreaking performance
Laura Dern channeling three or four or more overlapping
personalities that grow out of a long monologue that is autonomous
the film's starting point, is proof that the man is not playing;
has not lost his touch; still produces work unlike any other, work to be treasured
.

DL explores a world accessible only by going beyond the rational mind.
This is a kingdom where a character, in this particular case the
characters played by Dern (the press cliché is' defining career
execution "), becomes other characters and becomes again. It is a
kingdom where there is another world behind the sound stage and that other
world is another life, another identity, another series of terrors. And we
go there, we come back, and we are going there again.

After becoming the desperate monologist, Dern also became "Nikki", a movie star
elected by "Devon (Justin Theroux) to star in a film," The
High in Blue tomorrow ', directed by "Kingsley (Jeremy Irons). And
"Kingsley" works with "Freddie" (Harry Dean Stanton), a co-director who
cadges money from the stagehands and actors and apologized saying: "I used to wear my
own weight. "On High in Blue
morning turns out to be a remake of a film condemned," 4 / 7 ', never finished because both stars
were killed, and based on a Polish gypsy folktale. In the film Nikki, as
"Sue" is deceiving her husband, and during the shooting of Nikki "
real life" warns her husband not to do it really. But, of course, they make the movie
parallel relationship "real life" and find the stars who are
confusion with his film characters, as in
Michele Piccioni the recent film , La vita che vorrei. That

Expletive-strewn with 14 pages ( "a space")-ur
monologue that anchors the film was shot in the back of the house DL with a Sony PD - 150
digital video camera that had begun to use in connection with its
site, www.davidlynch.com, "a common model of midrange"
that now sells for $ 2,724. The monologue became the ground of being and the Sony
became the simple visual tool that gave him "Inland Empire" and its contents
its visual style. Lynch has shifted to DV forever,
saying a sad goodbye to the glorious beauty and complexity of
cumbersome celluloid, and for this film embraced its limitations DV. Failure to do so
trying to see how movie. DL admits people say the quality "is not as good
." But it's a different quality. It reminds me, "he says,"
early 35 - millimeter film. You see things differently. It speaks to you differently
"(NYTimes, Dennis Lim).

This reversal, if you like, a crude visual aid (but one that
in many ways more fluid, both for agents - that can work across
without breaks -- and the editor - you have on hand software - and crew
- may be less, and light work), has resulted in the director's creative juices
, led him back to a form of raw material and energy
immediacy of Eraserhead. This is a return to youth and early
still something completely new. It is burning bridges and
rediscovering roots at the same time. Which is basically what any artist
to stay alive have to do.

Dern anchors the film, but has many elements that require anchorage. There
discredited the husband of the monologist discredited, that
joins a Baltic circus. There 'sa woman played by Julia Ormond, who
the first seen in a backyard with sleazy a screwdriver in your stomach, and
later reappears as the wife of Billy. And there is a thread Polish -
that emerged from the DL Baltic has forged connections and the structure of
ideas can trace the origins of the film from Devon and Sue (
the ur-"4 / 7 '). There are weeping Polish prostitute, watching a television program
monitor in which there is a sitcom shot on a stage with people wearing rabbit heads
a laugh track creates a disturbing effect because
laughs to come "meaning" points, giving the lines of a sinister ring.
Later, the screen shows Sue. Inclinations of the journal Ed Gonzales
cleverly refers to the monitor as one of several "gateways" through which the characters
merge into other worlds (go through the mirror glass; fall through
rabbit-holes). It is clear that everything is in publishing, and those who feel DL
's creations are chaotic and senseless portentously ignore
his canny sense of structure.

There are quite a group of prostitutes in a motel room, talk to
Laura Dern and character of singing and dancing, "Do locomotion," and then at the end
LIPSYNCH Nina Simone "Sinner Man"
behind the closing credits - one of the great closing credits of recent decades, a
rollicking, wonderful episode, which encourages it, but still contains flashes
( Laura side) that will haunt the memories of the strangeness and terror
happened.

These are some of the boxes linking 'Inland Empire'. DL
mocks the idea of "real", while using the concept of
slide in between worlds.

All of this is gloriously cinematic.

The film "technically" U.S. has no distributor, although it has many
European and French Studio Canal, signed on early in the stage
DL when he said that he was using DV and did not know what he was doing.

The set of "Inland Empire" may "resembles the cosmic free fall of
's mind warping final act in Mulholland Drive" (Lim), but on the other
hand, someone to "identify" with (if he can withstand the trip) in
Laura Dern, who dominates the film and the threads together. Their performance varied
completely sure of winning much mention at the end of the year.

After fifteen years of disappointment and doubt about DL,
is possible to love your job again.
