Mickey Rourke has to be one of the largest, lowest-rated yet,

americas actors alive today. This movie proves it. The

plays this character with layers and a depth few could achieve or even dare

. Unfortunately, most people regard to their personal lives

(abrasive personality and own) with such contempt that they refuse to

fairly judge his professional achievements.

Rourke plays a grotesquely facially disfigured man who lives

ridiculous, there is no life at home, and the resulting self-guilt led
< br> him to a life of crime. Nothing original, I will admit. But a

Rourke is to see the subtle image to see not a man of anger, like most

would give agents, and are expected by the hearing, but a

man quietly locked into their world of pain. The way it organizes its

cigarette at the top, to cover a portion of his face;

a downward tilt of his head, the eyes of anyone who avoided the gaze, or Curt, quiet

speaking so as not to draw too much attention. The example of

speech is in itself remarkable. Not only affect a Rourke

serious speech impediment as the disfigured Johnny Handsome,

but then to have a new one as a man who is now capable of

proper diction, but that is completely unused to

speak properly. And he is constant throughout his image.

The story is simple but good, driven with an excellent visual editing, and a wonderful

banda sonora (provided by Ry Cooder), which actually
< ; br> sets the pace. The cast is largely wonderful and, with very few recognizable

"stars". Forest Whitaker as the sympathetic but

driven and demanding medical, Lance Henrikson and Ellen Barkin in

incredible performances as two completely greedy "scum of the bags,"
;
And Morgan Freeman, plays a real change, as rotten, taunting

probation officer. Probably the only weak link in the cast is

Elizabeth McGovern, who attempted Louisiana accent never submits and

excess of all actors just enough.

This film remains a favorite of mine that I watch and occasionally

again, always enjoying both for the promotion of tension excitingly

of history, and great performances (and performers)

littered throughout the movie. If you like this film, I also suggest "The

Elephant Man" by David Lynch (for life-with-disfigurement

aspects), or " Warriors, "by Walter Hill, as a big, early example of this

director of the same work.

8 / 10 Mickey Rourke at his best!
This is a minor Walter Hill film, partly rescued by a pair of strong performances
and an excellent score. Mickey Rourke (as last good film that is perhaps
) plays John Sedley / 'Johnny Handsome' and work for
first part of the film under composed presumably inspired by the Elephant Man
-- Just as a handicap mumble, recalling the idol of actor Marlon Brando
. Hill, once protected Peckinpah, has seen better days
with such films as The Warriors, 48 hours, Streets of Fire, etc., and the struggles here to make a bald
quite dynamic plot. In essence this is a tale of crime ido
evil, betrayal, brooding, and then the final revenge, quite lively
mandatory love interest. The surgery side of the story, which Sedley
miraculously renewed in handsome Mickey Rourke, is nothing more than a rodeo
an underworld story that we've all seen before.

Hill typically provides for the opening sequences of his memorable films.
This strength is apparent, since details of the cast appear on the
preparation for the initial robbery, court along with effectiveness and precision. The director
the color fades at the opening of the planning of these scenes, and later
also includes a brief and ugly flashback in black and white. There
two robberies in the film, points on which much of the drama
tour, took touch with some of the participants and editing
Department. There is something along the lines of Hong Kong crime film as
masked villains broke into shops and offices to make their 'kill'.
Elsewhere flag things a bit - especially in the unconvincing Sunny - Rafa
relationship, played respectively by an aggressive and Ellen Barkin
normally excellent Lance Henriksen. Unfortunately the character and motivations of the main villain
remains one-dimensional, and Rafa's naked armed threat -
never rises above stereotype.

Sedley struggles to first rebuild his face, then his life, while the cortege
rather insipid Donna (Elizabeth McGovern) and the emergence of his master plan.
While his motivation for revenge is clear, between surgery and theft
not languishing. Donna is a 'pretty girl': either naive or forgive,
However, one choses to see her, whose role in the final outcome is also considered
`nice work." This vague pejorative epithet, as well as his ill
tried to cover up a former boyfriend, provide more
its moments. Their presence Sedley not to kick it needs, and its
end, unfortunately, kidnapping is predictable. Trying to work up
another major character, this time through the physician-with-a-social-conscience

Morgan Freeman), he disappears. On the positive side, Rourke gives a good overall performance

new face. Despite the limitations of the script, and even with those affected
mumble, the actor avoids falling into bath at this critical stage,
really convince the audience of his pleasure in his new identity. His
convincing gratitude to those who have changed their appearance
pays dividends at the end of the film, during his confrontation with the vengeful RAF.
RAF's pummeling of Sedley and the face of vicious attack on his newly formed
characteristics with a knife is truly disturbing, precisely
Rourke, because so successfully has informed humanity behind the criminal
and subject to surgical principles. As

shooting (whose dogged perseverance reminds one of
Inspector Javert in Les Miserables), Freeman is excellent. An actor whose distinctive tones and
modulated performances give any film class, he raises his hand, well above
lines is given here, and in a way that will make up for weaknesses in other
places. During his imprisonment few scenes with Rourke, in fact, one can close their eyes
to hear his voice, and to collect the greatest pleasures
The Shawshank Redemption (1994). It is he who recognizes the reality
center of the film: Sedley that can change its appearance, but never
can change what is inside of himself or where they lead: `I know what you
are, "says the criminal at one point. 'And we both know you're going
, we are not Johnny? "At the end of the film, after having flown
bullets and dust settled, Sedly finally recognized this fact through a
ironic phrase that involves both physical and moral assessment:` How do I look? " .

Fans of Rourke and Freeman certainly want to see this movie, although there are other
is rather less than what meets the eye. Ry Cooder,
regular collaborator with the director, becomes a magnificent score full of
slide guitar work, with lines under tragic for the action sequences. This makes
Although the final package to which they contributed so brave
is ultimately so unmemorable. Admirers of Hill, who want to see one of his late
urban thrillers with more interest, it will be better with trespass
three years later.
