In the early 1970s, Nicholas Garrigan, a young semi-idealistic Scottish doctor, comes to Uganda to assist in a rural hospital. Once there, he soon meets up with the new President, Idi Amin, who promises a golden age for the African nation. Garrigan hits it off immediately with the rabid Scotland fan, who soon offers him a senior position in the national health department and becomes one of Amin's closest advisers. However as the years pass, Garrigan cannot help but notice Amin's increasingly erratic behavior that grows beyond a legitimate fear of assassination into a murderous insanity that is driving Uganda into bloody ruin. Realizing his dire situation with the lunatic leader unwilling to let him go home, Garrigan must make some crucial decisions that could mean his death if the despot finds out.

Forest Whitaker's fiercely charismatic turn as Idi Amin dominates
to this intense story of fiction that it is difficult to honestly
pay attention to anything else in this political thriller 2006. Despite
he is definitely the place emotionally, he is not Curiously
protagonist of the story. That role falls to young James McAvoy, who plays Nicholas
Garrigues, a Scottish doctor early that companies
Uganda to satisfy their need for adventure after graduating medical school
. By chance, Garrigues is called upon to help with a sprained lower
Amin after his private car plows into a cow. Impressed by the young
lack of hesitation to take action, Amin appointed Garrigues
be his personal physician, a post he seduces the doctor
impressed in the dictator of Uganda's political inner circle and extravagant < br> lifestyle.
Scottish director Kevin MacDonald brings his extensive
documentary film-making skills to the fore here, because it creates a greater
realistic sense of the atmosphere in the capture of the oppression of Uganda
1970. Helping considerably with this image are the vivid colors
contrasts Anthony Dod Mantle of cinematography and propulsion
action induced by Justine Wright's sharp editing.
Screenwriters Peter Morgan (who also wrote "The Queen") and Jeremy Brock have developed a sharply delineated
character study of Amin, who evolves from a magnetic leader
giving hope to his people a tyrant to the conducting scarifying
murders imaginable on a scale (at least until the genocides in Rwanda and Darfur
). It is impossible to over-praise of the tower Whitaker
performance here. He was the dictator of the game, as well as its absolute
latent anger moving at full boil with a power
that is both subtle and bravery. His relationship with the fictionalized
Garrigues is the fundamental fabric of pivot point, although
contrast between the two can be almost too, sometimes extreme.
Although McAvoy admirably captures the boyish naivety Garrigues,
character is drawn out in rather broad terms that make her even more self
contrived as the story progresses.
To intensify political turmoil portrayed, the plot takes a melodramatic turn
in an adulterous affair and even the folds
infamous 1976 Entebbe hijacking incident to illustrate the Garrigues
increasingly precarious situation . All this is exciting, and even frankly
brutalizing towards the end, but also begins to feel a little too Hollywood
running. Kerry Washington shows how a true versatility
Amin closing third wife Kay, Simon McBurney, while cynicism seeps
suspicion easily as the British. A convincing
Brit-accented Gillian Anderson makes a few scenes count as tired
clinic worker who proves to have better instincts that Garrigues. But
see the film for Whitaker's magnificent work. He is so good.
Last King of Scotland Scorcher is a film that follows the story of the horrible
dictatorship that took over Uganda in the 1970's. The
the film is seen entirely through the eyes of young Nicolas Garrigues (
James McAvoy), a young Scottish doctor who decides he is tired of
Scotland and willing to venture into another country
make a difference.
Shortly after starting his job in the city, begins a friendship with
Idi Amin (Forest Whitaker), a powerful African leader Garrigues
offered a job as your doctor staff. Their relationship is developing
wonderful to behold on the screen, and for me was the main strength and
key point that made this movie go above and beyond.
Spoiler ahead:
Being an uninformed young adults who know nothing about the history of Africa
, so, therefore, had neither idea of what kind of leader Idi Amin is
until crashing the scene when Garrigues figures currently
a dictator murderer, which is destroying the African economy. This
misfortune of mine made this particular moment in the film simply
magic, and I found myself trying to get my head around how such
cheerful and loving nature really can be so violent.
End Spoiler:
This is where I realised what a fantastic performance
had given Forest Whitaker. I had deceived him into thinking that it was someone else,
he has made me think he was really a true democrat
only concerned about the people of Uganda. His change of character is so superb
sometimes too that I found myself thinking that it is simply unfair.
James McAvoy, although overshadowed by forests Whitakers
brilliant performance deserves credit too. His portrait of the young Scottish doctor who
is both naive and courageous is fantastic, and that is good
see the young Scotsman grow with every film hes in
It is generally is a simply amazing film, telling an important story
with some great performances. There is criticism even worth mentioning
for this movie that kept me on the edge of my seat until the end.
