Isabel and Clara are growing up in a time of terror. It is 1492, and Spain has decreed that all Jews must either convert to Catholicism, go into exile or face trial and execution. Although forcibly baptized, the sisters are chased through Christendom until they arrive in Venice. It is in this great maritime empire, where opulence rhymes with tolerance, that Isabel organizes secret passages for refugees fleeing the Inquisition while Clara falls in love with a Venetian noble, Paolo Zane. Isabel intends for her family to go to Istanbul, the only place where Jews can live freely, but Clara is reluctant to leave. She challenges Isabel's authority and is prepared to break her family ties and sacrifice her faith for love. Caught in this battle of wills is Clara's daughter, Victoria, who finds she is about to be married into the same faith that murdered her father.

I loved this movie. Among the highlights: cinematography and scenes from
Renaissance Venice, the delicate image of Jews in hiding trying to

maintain their faith, the superb performance of Isabel (Katherine Borowitz); < br>
the quiet beauty and expressiveness of the girl Victoria (which is a wonderful

young actress Hannah Taylor-Gordon), and the intrigues of the plot that keeps one
pasted to the screen, waiting to see what happens next.
My only criticism was that there was some lack of clarity in what was happening

as the plot reached its climax - in relation to both the glassmaker and the

sister emotional reactions among themselves near the end. But the lack of clarity
also maintains a reflection on the film. However, a disturbing film

that I recommend.
Since I know Bosnian director's previous work Kenovic (Kuduz and
The Perfect Circle), I really had high expectations for "The Secret
step." Well, I can say that was not disappointed, au contrary, this
the film is actually very well done, from the manuscript, cinematography
act. I was stunned by Katherine Borowitz who plays Isabel, but also
Hannah Taylor Gordon-who plays Victoria. These two actresses have
fantastic expression that adds extra value to this very good movie.
I'm glad John Turturro found its place in the movie, because I think
he is a great player with great potential, which could and should be used in projects
not usual for their roles. But even though they did good job, I
believe he was a little out of place in the film, but I am not sure ...
perhaps because I am accustomed to seeing him in more contemporary films.

I loved the story. It shows us how Jews were treated in
Christian Europe, where the witch hunt and the Inquisition were almost
National Sports.

Kenovic has a great eye for detail and aesthetics. The scenes are set
wonderfully, and I have enjoyed every moment in and around Venice.
I warmly recommend this movie to anyone who is interested in history and
beautifully shot film.

bothers me that Ademir Kenovic does not direct the movies more frequently
(mostly a producer), because he is very talented director.
