Spike Lee
rating:5.00
There is no doubt that Spike Lee is one of the best filmmakers working
these days. He is an original. Lee should be seen more frequently.
His films are always well prepared; who obviously enjoys working with the same
team and obviously love actors Lee. In their hands they all turn
major appearances.
This film is a curious thing. As written for the screen by Michael Genet,
the film tries to touch too many topics. It is a political
to see something that went wrong in our past history, as well as an expose of corruption in high levels
and a fun comedy about a man who is at the heart of women receive help
processing.
Mr Lee is perhaps tells us in a subtle way that we can not ignore
deception and corruption in high places. Corruption is the way Jack Armstrong
without requesting it. El Paso to be in the wrong place at the wrong time
. Jack was the epitome of a Buppie and his downfall is caused by the system
where he was a successful executive.
The proceedings are fabulous. Anthony Mackie, as Jack, is one of the best
male roles in any Spike Lee films. It helps that Mr Mackie
is an incredible actor that will go to more and better things and is sad at the same time because
Lee probably will not be able to pay his salary
in future films, the same way that it can not afford to Denzel Washington, Samuel L.
Jackson.
John Turturro keeps returning to work with Lee and they both have a certain
bonds and work well together. The mafioso played by Mr. Turturro
is something that is not considered, as is his dialogue. Ellen Barkin makes a rare appearance
. She is an actress who projects mystery and sex appeal to the
same time. Monica Belluci has a small role. Woody Harrelson also appears briefly
. Lonnette McKey and Jim Brown are the parents of
Jack and are good in their roles.
Kerry Washington as Fatima, the enterprising young woman who arrives at the
rescue is a new face that is a good complement to the film.
She is a talented actress who can hold their own against Mr Mackie all the time.
As usual, music plays a lot in the film. Terence Blanchard score
non-intrusive, but balances action. The great cinematographer Matthew Libatique
has given the film a patina that is rich and sensual,
the same time.
Spike Lee is an acquired taste. Yes, like him more every time we see a
of his movies!
I am sure that somewhere in "She Hate Me" is a good story that fazer for an entertaining movie. What we have, however, is a tortuous mess
dealing too hard to be a social satire.
The premise: Jack Armstrong (Anthony Mackie), a VP at a HotSHOT
pharmaceutical company, is suddenly unemployed and in need of money
. When his ex-girlfriend turned into a lesbian Goodrich Fatima (Kerry Washington
) offers $ 10000 to impregnate her and her lover Alex
(the sexy Dania Ramirez) Jack realizes that it could be a cow Sexual cash.
Next thing you know, is in high demand for rich
lesbians who want children.
The problem is that Lee does not know what he wants for his film. Or,
what history should be. Addressing too many topics and never
addresses some of them very well.
The film opens with a new title sequence that ends with a
broadside against President George W. Bush. Fair enough. Lee
little actually works. The story then becomes a kind of diatribe against
corporate greed, flagrant against the excesses of Enron and
WorldComs of the Corporate americas. OK. Then there is also all about these things
and impregnating lesbians. Jack and awareness of
if he is doing the right thing.
But the film suddenly turns into a defense of Frank Wills,
black security guard who discovered the Watergate burglary.
Lee makes a valid point that while all players involved in the theft and subsequent cover-up
happened to be lucrative career as statesmen,
authors, speakers and radio personalities, died in Wills darkness. A
tribute to Wills is long overdue. The man was a hero. But what the
Heck its history in making this movie? And at a time when
seems completely arbitrary, Lee also launched to Oliver North in the mix
Watergate figures.
For a satire to work, there is a need for something satirized. Frankly, I did not know what
is exactly what Lee was trying to send. And after a while, I
not care. His movie or a sex comedy or stinging social commentary
. In fact, sometimes "She hates me" plays more like a kind of unbridled
male fantasy. Not only are lesbians of all the attractions,
but also those who want to impregnate the old-fashioned way. The only
lesbian who decides artificial insemination and has not done so to plead
with Jack having sex with her.
Subtlety has never been Lee's forte. But in films such as "Do the Right Thing
" (1989) and "Jungle Fever" (1991), which somehow
find a good balance between satire and social commentary. In this case, he makes no such thing.
In "She Hate Me," Read about as subtle as a sledgehammer.
What is ultimately disappointing about "She Hate Me" is often the inane -
writing. When Fatima tells Jack that she has always been a lesbian, even when she was
data him, and was simply in denial, he adds, "And I do not mean a
river in Egypt. "This is how the dialogue is lame. It becomes even worse when
Lee and co-writer Michael Genet give Brian Dennehy
positively laughable dialogue later.
corrupt business practices of Enron and its ties with the Bush administration
administration deserves to be counted. How does a satire, if you must,
white-collar thieves who get off relatively easy and having close
enormously successful lives as a result of their crimes. But this is not the film that
ago.
Lee smart, talented and, of course, socially conscious, but only
seems to be throwing in every idea that there were "She Hate Me." Instead of being
Bitingly satirical on the values of society unbalanced, it is a
mishmash of a movie that is never as fun as it wants to be as provocative or as
it should be.
