On September, 11th 2001, after the terrorist attack to the World Trade Center, the building collapses over the rescue team from the Port Authority Police Department. Will Jimeno and his sergeant John McLoughlin are found alive trapped under the wreckage while the rescue teams fight to save them.

I honestly do not think that was very good at all, although I respect the
intentions of the filmmakers. Whichever one wants to say about
Oliver Stone, who demonstrated a commitment to the true history of these
two Port Authority policemen trapped in the rubble of the World Trade Center
and their wives worried.

I liked a lot of scenes in the beginning, the little details as mundane
when Michael Peña's character is going about their daily lives
Street rhythm. But the scenes in the WTC they are really uncomfortable, especially
cross between images and real actors.
They just do not match, neither the film nor the stocks of actors reactions. A few moments with
Pena standing there in the first
effective in creating a sense of surrealism horrible, and
just moments before the collapse was sudden and chilling ...
but generally not as powerful as I expected. For a movie called World Trade Center
, I suppose I expected a bit more context and not something
focused strictly on these two Port Authority policemen and an ex-Marine
Connecticut (as the only person outside these two cops' families
whose story is told in the film, the approach that it reeks of jingoism in
a GI Joe / Rambo vein).

know it's a little unfair to compare this United 93, but I have to
in order to illustrate this point. U93 told a story concrete (
the experience of passengers on the plane) and placed it within a context
(what was happening with the air traffic control and military).
The lessons that are reflected in the actions of the passengers are
enhanced by contrast with the impotence of the
"professionals" responsible for their safety. That is a powerful story
dramatically, the transmission of an item, and provide greater
historical context of what happened that day. Oliver Stone,
comparison, has been unable to link effectively to the experiences of these two policemen trapped
with the biggest events of the day, and his film suffers as a result
. And finally the movie shortchanges the great stories of the 2749
families who did not receive good news that day.

OK, so the film focuses on a small history of these two policemen trapped
and their families (and gung ho Marine, but has limited screen time
). Was his story and told him? The scenes amid the rubble were
oblige, but the back and forth with their wives became annoying
schmaltzy. Yes, Maggie Gyllenhaal gave a strong performance as the pregnant wife
and a lot of time with his family (ing the short
stage with the Colombian praying mother-in-law) were
emotionally moving, but the family things are lame melodrama. And to be honest
, including the performance of Maggie was a bit generic.
I understand that these characters are based closely on real life, but still felt very
Lifetime movie of the week. As for Maria Bello in the role of
another wife, I loved in his A History of Violence, but she was bland
in this regard. The kid actors playing their children were mostly terrible, and the film dragged
when his story was on the screen. The resolution is most
handles well, I really like what Oliver Stone is trying to convey
on these small gestures of kindness heroic in the face of such desolation
. But the power of these scenes is undermined by its
tendency to dump on the sappiness while largely ignoring the greater
horror of the day. It feels like a soap opera set against
greatest tragedy of our time, and that simply does not work for me.

In a nutshell ... not intense enough, not enough context, too melodrama,
not simply a sense of reverence for what happened, very impressive
job of recreating the field of debris, a charismatic performance
Maggie, generally a mediocre movie.
There is, of course, inevitably films made about 9-11 and
no doubt take different approaches to tell their stories. This
film, the second major effort representing the attacks of 9-11, approaches
history with head, to the letter of Ground Zero, from the viewpoint of some of
those most directly involved in the incident: rescue workers.
The fact that this film was directed by Oliver Stone was / is a surprise.
The film is benign in the sense that not
postulate about what happened that day and why, that is not your typical Stone film.
Instead, it takes its time telling an intimate story about a group of
rescue workers trapped in the collapse of World Trade Center towers and
its battle to survive and escape from hell unimaginable.

The film works because Stone takes time to clean your
characters, but they really care about these people and feel their emotions as a result
things from bad to worse that day. Cage, Bello,
Pena, et.al. play their roles effectively, makes us aware that 9-11
affected "ordinary people" and has caused to perform in an extraordinary way
.

In short, an excellent film. While the budget is large and full of big names
simply tells one of many stories to be told that day
effectively and accurately. As with United 93, I recommend
with what Kleenex.
