When you are an avid fan of a certain B-movie star, who also
inevitably have to fight through its tons of low-budget
irredeemably bad movies simply because his idol made the wise choice of career
Starring them. For example, being a fan of Jeffrey Combs caused me to suffer
films such as "Cave dweller" and "Lurking Fear," and I felt the need to endure
"Dracula 3000" and something called " Revenant "
only because I like Udo Kier. Now, I'm even bigger admirer of John Saxon
me of Jeffrey Combs and Udo Kier combined, and hence, even
pure crap as "Hellmaster" becomes crucial:! Big, big, big mistake
, since this is a hopelessly retarded horror movie and even of Saxony
sinister performance can not save it. The script of this thing is
completely senseless and dumb, but somehow has the pretension of being
an ambitious and even intellectual tale of terror. Saxon
occasionally appears as a mad professor who tested a new mental
drug invented by a group of homeless people in 1969. Things
was a bit evil and guinea pigs became misshapen monsters.
Now, more than 20 years later, back in the catacombs of a
college for gifted people (still, all students are rather stupid)
and hopes to resume his experiments. Our teacher is nut
hampered by a troublesome journalist (David Emge) who lost his wife
drugs, as well as some students redundant. The structure
executed by the director Douglas Schulze is terribly annoying. Useless
flashbacks are tracked daily current events, and then stupidly
mix with scenes of hallucinations and sub plots. It feels like Schulze
wants his viewers to connect the pieces of the puzzle, but you
simply do not care about him enough to do that. Few
bloody murders are committed by the monster-monster that appears on the DVD cover (a kind of Hellraiser
crossover between the head pin and Pumpkinhead), but I never really
evidence, if he was one of the boys homeless or one of the new student
species. John Saxon acting on autopilot, as if
very well aware that production is lower, and the rest of the cast is frankly
abhorrent. This piece of garbage
somehow managed to gather a small base of fans, but I advise him to skip, even if
John Saxon consider to be a demigod.
Hellmaster takes place in the "Institute School for the Gifted Kant"
where gifted teenagers go to school I suppose. However, the school has a murky past as
some twenty years ago, a mad professor named Jones (John Saxon
) conducted experiments on students using illegal drugs that
developed to increase and improve their psychic abilities,
unfortunately only managed to convert drugs to adolescents in
zombies senseless (how to say that the difference?). After all Jones
years is back and has been using its drug to create a horde (OK
about three) of zombies of the homeless who controls it and hoped
will help turn around the world in which zombies, well,
controls. For some reason, Jones cree que from his former place of
work is a good idea and it's up to students Shelly (Amy Raasch) Drake &
(Edward Stevens), together with bitter journalist Robert (David Emge)
halt Jones plans to conquer the world!
written, produced and directed by Douglas Schulze
I personally do not think that much of Hellmaster. The main problem is the script
makes no sense a whole, there are many holes in the plot and things that do not fit
. To begin with I was never convinced everybody was in danger
certainly with the military might of the world where there could be
face of population ageing John Saxon and moldy about zombies? The plot is
inconsistent and there are ideas here that just come and go with little regard
of continuity. The script is taken too seriously
considering the matter and trying to say some things about
religion and the homeless, unfortunately, it does not do a very good job.
The film has a reasonable pace, but when it's all so confusing,
forgettable deaf and what is the point? The teenage son of his character
typical soulless idiots who should have the word "victim" tattooed on their foreheads
, I also thought Saxon as the main villain not only
threatening or menacing enough, but That is until the script again
instead of Saxony that he makes the best you can with fine material.
Director Schulze tries to make a Dario Argento and with all the bright neon light
a bit like Suspiria (1976), unfortunately is not Schulze
Argento (their names should not be spoken in the same sentence
frankly) and the results are somewhat underwhelming to say the least.
There is not much in the way of tension or atmosphere is.
Hellmaster To give a little credit where it is because some of the special effects makeup
are actually quite impressive, the zombies certainly a good
and there are a couple of decent, if underused, human effects of mergers.
I am quite sure that Hallmaster had a low budget that does not help,
think some of the ideas here are a bit ambitious for the budget and as a result
that simply do not work. I'm not sure what he did agree to appear in this
Saxon, then again considering his filmography I guess he had been
appear in almost any money for rent. Emge always know
'Flyboy of Dawn of the Dead' and it does not look
time has been kind to him as he seems to have put a little weight because in
Dawn of the Dead (1978). Surprisingly only has appeared in four films with
this being the last to date, both for a big return. Trivia:
he actually met with him in a movie, but just before I had seen this.
Hellmaster is a little mess, which really does nothing for me. If I went to call
half I believe that being too generous.
Not worth their time or money.
