A newspaper photographer, Jean, researches the lurid and sensational axe murder of two women in 1873 as an editorial tie-in with a brutal modern double murder. She discovers a cache of papers that appear to give an account of the murders by an eyewitness. The plot weaves between the narrative of the eyewitness and Jean's private struggle with jealousies and suspicions as her marriage teeters.

Despite the tortuous of the plot, there is much to admire in this
image, in particular the sexual tension that distills. Contemporary history
Polanski is derived from the bright knife in the water, while the
flashback story is ripe and with an ominous atmosphere of mind that overwhelms
the rest of the image and maintains throughout the film . The whole
performances are first-level, slightly irregular, sometimes, but overall
committed. Elizabeth Hurley is appropriate in their sexy little, and
no less interesting than anyone else, despite what one might expect. This is a
rather sombre mood piece Bigelow, whose reputation as a great director
of action movies is apparent only briefly in this thriller tenuous.
Well worth seeing.
