Internet love connections and mail-order brides rarely ever work out, and John (played by Ben Chaplin) should have known. Having never been lucky in the game of love and tired of waiting for the perfect woman to come along, John decides to take his chances and orders a mail-order bride from Russia online. At first, things seem perfect: his new bride Nadia (Nicole Kidman) is a gorgeous woman, and although she may not speak much English, her skills in the bedroom more than make up for any communication problems. When Nadia's 'cousins' unexpectedly arrive to celebrate her birthday, John is drawn into their web of corruption and crime.

I had never even heard of "Birthday Girl" before I borrowed a DVD
one of my friends. The cover says "Thriller" and I suppose that
was what I expected, especially considering the tone fairly dark set of
the front of the deck. When the film began, although I was a little surprised
...

and I suppose that I am not the only one surprised by this. Apparently,
- the film makers themselves are almost surprised by the change in styles
that happen around the halfway into the film. It begins as a light comedy,
turns darker and then cut short by an almost comical note. All the way
i found through the darkest parts difficult to accept because of the stupid
inception.

I do not know the background here myself. This film does not seem like the usual big-budget
things you expect to see Nicole Kidman. The
fact that she spoke Russian in most of the film is somewhat unexpected
. Sometimes I feel that this is perhaps the point of the entire film
. An experiment where Nicole Kidman, Vincent Cassel, Mathieu Kassovitz
speak Russian as a prop? If that's the case that
is not enough by far to carry this movie.

I can not say that I was bored with "Birthday Girl" really. It
sufficiently entertaining most of the time. But the ambiguity of mind of the film
worries me. I find it very difficult to take seriously the parties
comedy seriously when there is just around the corner. Somehow
takes the edge. It would have been better to choose a style and stick with it
. Also stereotypes Russians (played by French actors
) is a tired concept. A film that is not painfully bad, but
easily forgotten.

This is a good example of a film that, despite the low rating is more
worth seeing. The story is interesting and has no time
before chemistry between Nicole Kidman and Ben Chaplin
grabs your attention. He is first class and the characters are represented
well. Sometimes it feels like the director himself can not decide between
drama and romantic comedy. Ben Chiller image of law-abiding and
with English shy porn SM
magazines hidden in the bedroom creates a lot of moments of laughter! As in the aspect
Nicole Kidman's eyes when she is offering its first taste of John
intimacy in a long time ... Sometimes the actors and, above all, Nicole Kidman
give this comedy expertly very dramatic bias.
