(action, drama, history, war)
Action/war drama based on the best-selling book detailing a near-disastrous mission in Somalia on October 3, 1993 where nearly 100 U.S. Army Rangers, commanded by Capt. Mike Steele, were dropped by helicopter deep into the capital city of Mogadishu to capture two top lieutenants of a Somali warlord which lead to a large and drawn-out firefight between the Rangers and hundreds of Somali gunmen which led to the destruction of two U.S. Black Hawk helicopters in Mogadishu, and the heroic efforts by various Rangers to get to them, centering on Sgt. Eversmann, commanding one Ranger unit named Chalk Four, leading Rangers to the first black hawk crash site, to Warrant Officer Durant who was only survivor of the second black hawk crash site and whom was captured, to Col. McKnight who leads a rescue convoy for the Rangers only to get lost within the hostile city, to Sgt. Sanderson desperately trying to get to the first crash site, to Staff Sgt. Yurek who leads two fellow Rangers, Nelson and Twombly to meet with up their squad, Chalk Four, at the first crash site, to many others involved who where either killed or survived.

By breaking down and look as honestly and cynicism
(assuming
it is possible that in a minute), there are only two types of
war movie: for and against. The underlying theme of almost all war movies - especially since
Apocalypse Now - usually boils down to an analysis of
the 'value' of war, of its value. It is useless, or their need. Is the fight
action justified because the attempt to find peace or war
is never justifiable, no matter what the intention?
Pro or con?
The interesting thing is that since World War II, this
underlying message in nearly all images of war has changed slowly
the first to the second . Again, this is usually in the form of two ways. Anyone
us see the game results after the publication of what appears to be a
strange and reckless set of orders high command (ie
Apocalypse Now or
Saving Private Ryan). Or we have a vision of law in action since
everything falls apart: hear the bullets whizzing past our noses, reeling from the effects of
RPG'sy looking blankly as the bodies begin to
mount (Platoon, for example). Black Hawk Down, directed by Ridley Scott and accurately
after the true story of best selling book by Mark Bowden, very much
adopts the perspective of the latter.
On October 3 1993, a small unit of U.S. Army Rangers and Delta Force troops
dropped by helicopter into hostile territory in Mogadishu, Somalia,
with what is perceived as a simple mission: the capture of two
lieutenants of Somali warlord, General Aideed. The unit is under command
Mayor William Garrison (Sam Shepard), and led by Sergeant
Matt Eversmann (Josh Hartnett) in its first direct experience of frontline leadership
. It also has a personal goal - to ensure that everyone comes back alive
.
however, these things are never as easy as they seem - hence, the development
book and film - and when 18 years of frontline novice Todd
is Mirlo injured since the beginning, the entire mission begins to crumble. More U.S.
troops were wounded, and when the Somalis by two Black Hawk helicopters, the mission
completely changed: now is a rescue operation.
And for about ninety minutes, you are subjected to some of the most intense
disturbing, graphic, violent and spare cooling conflicts
representation
you see. Remember the Omaha Beach scene in Save the soldier
RYAN? This is a half hour long. Think about something three times
that long, even more "realistic" and (thankfully) not flag-waving. That is the essence of
Black Hawk Down.
Ultimately, one hundred and twenty-three U.S. soldiers
were involved in the Mogadishu conflict. Nineteen were killed and one
also thousands of Somalis died.
Unlike Ryan, Black Hawk Down does not create a core of characters,
focusing on their makeup and emotional depth. No. Instead, just know
our 'heroes', with very little time spent on each of the characters motivation
or purpose. And this is a good thing. First, you're a little
rather bewildered by the large cast, and this is not helped by the numerous distant
POV scenes that is just this reviewer wonder he was seeing
life < br> and die. But surely that is an important and crucial element of war -
you are involved in these suicide missions with men who barely know.
You do not have time to share their life stories. You may have only met
week,
that day, or within the last minute. And then it completely.
Get fragments of data: Eversmann all attention is focused on
not leave the team; Specialist Danny Grimes (Ewan McGregor), so long
tied to his desk simply because excelled at typing, and Sergeant Delta
"Hoot" Hoot (Tom Sizemore, who will soon be playing Bruce Banner in the HULK),
wise, despite his years, somehow making more sense of the absurd that
anyone else.
But any characterization is underestimated and to the point, that is the way it should be
. The sweet and naive facedness of troops
is key to the success of the film, and the emotional impact on him. As errors
bodies and assembly, we come to see the horror of the conflict - the carnage and devastation
, relentlessness and never-ending waves of Somali forces -
directly across the U.S. eyes Rangers and Delta Force squad.
I was a little stunned by the impact of the film, both in how the action
front of you and shakes it violently until you want to let go, and the occasional
and very touching soft moments. In fact, the action is so intense
that I found myself sometimes glazing over, thinking of something else, and
afterwards I put this down to some kind of need for an emotional
Release; certainly can not fault the film in that direction. It was simply a case of
'too'.
Throughout the film both acting and direction are superb; Ridley Scott
has an eye for detail and filmography that is probably unmatched. Even his
less effort, as Hannibal are beautifully shot. And Black Hawk Down
is one of its best efforts to date.
The musical score is also excellent, and I am encouraged to hear the Stone Temple Pilot's
CREEP near the beginning of the film. I think this is
the first time I hear a song STP in any film.
What also is very positive is the lack of U.S. nationalism in this picture.
americas saving the day. Unlike, say, brother Tony Scott TOP GUN -
what it is doing a totally different issue (that is, let's make a little money
and recruit some
Children in the Navy at the same time) - this is not the
could
the U.S. There is no hint of leaving in Black Hawk Down. People
made real mistakes, and real people died.
Speaking of Tony Scott, however, my only minor quibble was Sam Shepard's
performance. It was probably wrong in the film, since all their Mannerisms
(especially how they took off his sunglasses quick to point out that type of
so that stereotypes military types always seem to do) seems to me < br> come directly from TOP GUN. It was a little too 'Bleh' for my liking. For
what I know William Garrison could have been exactly well, but
still seems a little Hollywood.
I too was not entirely comfortable on how Somalis were portrayed;
this movie is not really about good versus evil in my opinion, but in
view, U.S. are the bad guys. At least insofar as they are
at fault. Comparisons with Vietnam are both unnecessary
participation of the U.S. in the Somali civil war, and in the end credits of the film
when we learned that the Medal of Honor was awarded to two U.S. soldiers
for the first time since the conflict in Vietnam. However, throughout the movie
Somalia are considered only in two ways - either a force of relentless
bloodthirsty murderers, or simply people trying to stay away from the path. Now yes, this
May
be what really was like - I can not say because I was not there - but the overall message
did not fit well with me. It seemed too one-dimensional,
a little bloodthirsty, and that left a bitter taste.
also, as mentioned earlier the movie is often confusing for the extension
battle scene, and ensures more than one viewpoint. As the blood and dirt
begins to pile, you are asking that you are viewing,
especially when the prospect is several soldiers from a distance.
But that can be forgiven. This is not PREDATOR, and while the film is
outstanding as a piece of science fiction, he made a great effort to separate the
marines so that the viewer will have an easy time following < br> each.
That, of course, is not real life, and Black Hawk Down is perhaps as close
as we have come yet to capture accurately the true sense of
War.
Rating: **** 1 / 2 (five)
Black Hawk Down movie is a war unparalleled. Other films that I can remember, as
Courage Under Fire, has a powerful story, but fall short of
authenticity. Because of the history, which showed a weak and scandalous
military hierarchy, the director, Ed Zwick, was not granted permission
to use real Army team. As can be read in the trivia / goofs section
that film, British tanks were provided to the production company and
dress up
see how americas M1S. The helicopters used were probably
'Hollywood
arsenal' or rental of the National Guard. Even some of the dialogues and
practices were to rise in the department of realism. As a U.S. Army
vet (1995-2000), I knew when I look at theaters in 1996 that some
uses of weapons and vehicles were not only real! However, Courage Under Fire was
interesting and legitimate. With regard to other war movies that try to tell a story or
worth giving a message, any semblance of military jargon and
practices are shot to hell (the terrible but watchable Rambo III; low Mike
quality Dudikoff vehicle section), or overcooked (
good man
- "Yes sir! To Sir Roger!"), or simply pure McSilly (behind enemy
Lin ).
Black Hawk Down hits the mark in every way. There are no ultra-formal or
heroic Jack Nicholson---A few good men-speeches. The UH-60 and AH-6J
helicopters used are the real planes on loan from the units involved in
8 / 3
and 8 / 4 1993, non-with-slapdash counterfeit spare parts.
Opponents of the film say that this is a flag-waving, recruiting posters,
special effects-only production. They also learn about how the Somalis
were listed as non-humans, the Americans were interchangeable, and that more than
the events surrounding the mission of real life were not portrayed. Well, those same
people either were not in service or miss the mark completely! First of all
note the absence of stars get higher. There are many established
or
at the time and coming players, but fortunately not distract the viewer
, like the A-list heavy soopy The Thin Red Line. Moreover, the American
not appear quite as invincible or - as shown
getting their asses handed to them, arguing among themselves, and suffering
greatly. And
on them interchangeable, as well as some negative comments
state, hey - something we all look the same in BDUs! Save the soldier
RYAN,
a work of fiction (and also a great achievement), which had less
characters, can afford to give each man a face, a name and
connection to the audience. Ridley Scott treaty with dozens of characters thrown
over a hundred actual battle, and therefore impractical.
also Black Hawk Down has nothing to do with "Operation Restore Hope ', which stretched
during 1993 and 1994. That's why some poorly thought out comments
noted that the Somali perspective is not shown or the events that led to the U.S.
/
UN intervention. It is 24 hours, most of the battle of Mogadishu
U.S.
perspective. That's it. Otherwise we would have been a monstrous three hours
production as well as films set in the years 1960 and 1970, as well as the longest
Day and Patton, both of which are applied months World War II, if not years.
I have not seen one, but I am a bit IMDb Junkie, as far as I know!
Black Hawk Down uses composite characters and events spliced together by a
watchable film. Events are composed of, yes, but ... Of course, there is continuity
the occasional error. The CGI effects are impressive. Imagine if
this has been a Dominic West (Con Air, the daughter of GENERAL) film, or
filmed by some Gen X shmoe. There would have been bullet-time cuts, zooms
extreme, and who knows what else? Ridley Scott was the right man for the job
.
Black Hawk Down is without peer. It tells the story of 24 hours in the life
U.S. soldiers in a clear, focused and honorable. What other
true-events movie has come close? Apollo 13 dramatised and has created people and
events of a terrible movie. Gloria and Schindler's List did the same,
successfully and honorably taking liberties with the actual occurrences of
the sake of movie-dom. PS: do not miss Mike Durant's new book "In The Company of
Heroes." Great book. Do not hesitate to contact me with comments and notes.
