Have you ever seen a movie that you actually pay money to see more
more than once? What if I told you that this movie was an adjustment to a single
main location, two key players and three supporting cast? While these elements are not an
what it sounds like classic film about the paper, adding
director Joel Schumacher (Bad Company, 8mm) in the mix, along with
screenwriter Larry Cohen, who has this story dictated to him by Alfred Hitchcock
same about 30 years ago, and you have the perfect mix of
blackmail, violence and extortion: Phone Booth.
The story begins by showing a portrait of the life of Stu Shepard
(Daredevil's Colin Farrell). Stu is a New York Hustler that people love to
hate. It is selfish, two face everyone knows and what he can
for personal gratification. The even fantasizes about cheating on his wife
Kelly (Pitch Black's Radha Mitchell) and the object of that desire is
Pamela McFadden (Dawson Creek's Katie Holmes). Pam is a young actress
seeking his first break, while Stu has been preparing for the big time
. To prevent your Pam called to appear on his cell phone bill, Stu
the flame of the only remaining Phone Booth in the heart of New York City.
however,
things would be different today. After hanging, you receive a call
which in turn your entire world upside down.
The caller (24 of Kiefer Sutherland) is a sniper, who has been targeting
high-profile suits underhanded, like Stu. He has a few simple rules so
Stu that does not meet the same fate as two others before him:
not leave the cabin, do not tell anyone you're talking to,
and more importantly, do not hang up. To prove his seriousness, the caller outbreaks
and kills a pimp who tries to physically remove Stu from the booth to take
too long with your call. This, unsurprisingly, does not help matters, and
procurer of the fallen Hookers now I think it is really Stu
who committed the murder. Soon, the police and numerous media are covering this
serious situation.
things increasingly difficult for Stu Shepard as Kelly and Pam both
show up. In the meantime, the caller continues to play various
mind games, while the sympathetic
NYPD Captain Ramey (Forest Whitaker's Twilight Zone)
tries to resolve the issue. During all this, Stu tries to maintain his sanity and
not risking more lives. Their lies no longer matters.
As a result, he now must search his soul, finds himself and try to
more astute that the caller, taking the game to a whole new level.
The cinematography is impressive. Schumacher uses the right angle to
every shot, and succeeds in maintaining the attention of all with pans and quick
abrupt cuts. After all, the 80-minute film seems longer but not because
is boring. The greatest reward comes with a twist ending that changes
result of the film within sixty seconds.
There was a bad performance in telePhone Booth. Farrell's ability to convert his Irish Brogan
a Brooklyn drawl that makes his performance as
Bullseye in Daredevil see how a child's school play compared to
Broadway level of performance that manages here. While Mitchell and Holmes did not
have a long parties, their functions added just enough to history and that
achieved until the level of his characters. Forest Whitaker
was a surprising great addition to the smelter and its role as
sympathetic cop is one who does not see often, and hence, must be welcome. However,
all of these actors are outshine by Kiefer Sutherland, who ends up being
very creepy and one of the best antagonists in recent film history
by just using your voice .
Is Best Picture victory in next year's Academy Awards?
Probably not. However, with a great history, top-notch direction and a cast
with great chemistry, what else can you ask for? On a possible five stars
I give this the limit of five years with a desire to go even higher. Despite that
are going to see again and again, not everyone has the same tastes. However, would
to $ 8 a ticket to see the film at least once.
If nothing else, that makes you stop and think: The next time you enter a
telePhone Booth, only that we will be watching?
I saw the premiere of "Phone Booth" in 2002
Toronto International Film Festival, and I loved it! It is rare that a
characteristic of this kind, even to show TIFF, which should say something about
. I know that sounds like a hard sell.
The whole thing takes place outside a Phone Booth in Manhattan, and
shot in 10 days for less than $ 2 million. But this movie is
electricity. It blew me away! Stuart "Stu 'Shepard (Colin Farrell), a sleazy publicist
, use this Phone Booth to call his girlfriend,
because his wife checks his cell phone bills. The phone rings,
and when he collects, all hell breaks loose. The voice on the other end
(Kiefer Sutherland is simply terrifying) warns that if
leaves the post will be killed. At first Stu do not believe him, but we find
pretty fast that their lives are in real danger, and
stranger at the other end of the line knows everything about his life and Stu
. Then the police show (Forest Whitaker is as wonderful as ever
police in charge) and order Stu
outside the booth. I spent the next hour on the edge of my seat. I do not want to give something
further, but is one of the most suspenseful
movies I've seen in a long time! You should see this film
! I do not think it will get a very big release, although
is directed by Joel Schumacher (St. Elmo's Fire, Flatliners,
Batman and Robin, 8mm, Tigerland). Schumacher was the selection
and talked about how a number of different agents
(including Mel Gibson) and directors have been related
script, and has taken years to reach the screen. He was able to do with Colin Farrell
after 20th Century Fox's exec saw him in
"Tigerland" and decided to take a chance. But he still does not
regarded as a `big 'star. Kiefer and only came to the project in the final
(although Schumacher said it was the only type of paper,
and I agree), and not see him much. So the film
can not get much of a boost when it comes out. Do not let that deter you
. If you like a good ride, you should see this movie.
