A young Bangladeshi woman, Nazneem, arrives in 1980s London, leaving behind her beloved sister and home, for an arranged marriage and a new life. Trapped within the four walls of her flat in East London, and in a loveless marriage with the middle aged Chanu, she fears her soul is quietly dying. Her sister Hasina, meanwhile, continues to live a carefree life back in Bangladesh, stumbling from one adventure to the next. Nazneen struggles to accept her lifestyle, and keeps her head down in spite of life's blows, but she soon discovers that life cannot be avoided - and is forced to confront it the day that the hotheaded young Karim comes knocking at her door.

This adaptation of Monica Ali's best-selling novel follows
conflict in the small world of Nazneen, a girl from Bangladesh who leaves behind
happy days playing with her sister round his people for a marriage
1980 in London. At first it almost live a life
purda within the walls of his east London council flat with his oafish
middle-aged husband, fearing that his life has ended. Director Gavron
balances the intimate moments against the increasingly tense atmosphere in
Brick Lane, closely united as a community reacts to the events of 11
From September 2001, and public attitudes toward Muslims or anyone who just looks
'different' later. To emphasize the smallness of this
community and family within it, many of the shots are close-up
or taken through gauze, hanging clothes or glass, the camera work is
virtually all steadycam, sharing rooms, balconies and staircases with
players. Struggling to play the 'good wife', Nazneen
one day discovers a measure of independence in a sewing machine provided, which allows
cover some of the gaps in her husband's erratic
employment; through it collides with life again, like clothing

. Less fun, more limited in focus, Brick Lane, however, adds
new and interesting notes with its emphasis on youth willing girlfriend.
Nazneen Ahmed (nice, a little mysterious Tannishtha Chatterjee)
seventeen when married to Chanu Ahmed (
interesting Satish Kaushik). He is not only older, fat and unattractive, but once
silly man. The purport to be an intellectual as Ashoke (Irfan Khan)
name, but if he is unable to parlay his love of Proust and
David Hume in a good job. Eventually, he becomes a bus driver,
but not before he had arrived with a woman wrapped usury in the community
buy a computer. Meanwhile Nazneen begins sewing to make money, and Bangladesh
young man who runs the factory, Karim (
Christopher Simpson), has a romance with her.

2001 Karim appears and becomes quickly and Islamic militants, while Chanu
Ahmed comes across as more complex than it might have done. He is a Mensch
suffering, a man who can not fit in, and therefore also
someone who does not flow with prejudice or confusion
crowd, and hence, it is that recently a strong speech deflate

's wife Brick Lane is a charming woman, but their correspondence
relationship with his sister back home seems an unfortunate victim of
screen adaptation - is never quite clear what that all
flashbacks to his childhood shared, namely that mean in terms of adults or why it
relationship too, like others, fizzles. The interest of this new film
remains its focus on the obvious possibility that
though a marriage can lead to the spread, and in any case pass
understanding, and that an elderly can continue being unattractive. The husband
going to the house just because all their opetions have died. But that's a real result
not typically get to see.
