(documentary, sport)
From Gold's Gym in Venice Beach California to the showdown in Pretoria, amateur and professional bodybuilders prepare for the 1975 Mr. Olympia and Mr. Universe contests in this part-scripted, part-documentary film. Five-time champion Arnold Schwarzenegger defends his Mr. Olympia title against Serge Nubret and the shy young deaf Lou Ferrigno, whose father is his coach; the ruthless champ psyches out the young lion. Sardinian Franco Columbu competes in the lightweight class; at home in Italy he solves a tight parking problem by lifting the car into place. Joe Weider is the marketer; Mike Katz and Ken Waller go for the title of Mr. Universe. Bodybuilding and a celebrity-to-be go mainstream.

It is hard to imagine that before he became a multimillionaire movie stars and
Governator of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger began his film career
with a docu-drama, the aptly named "Pumping
Iron. "
Basically, a documentary about the world of bodybuilding circa 1975, "pump
Iron" focuses on Arnold Schwarzenegger last effort to achieve the Lord
Olympia for the sixth time in a row, before officially retiring from the
"best sport" and heading off to Hollywood for a movie career. (
Five years before he had participated in the powerful "Hercules in New York," I've been quoted as calling
"fun bad movie ever.")
< br> There is not much to say about a film like "Pumping Iron", though, so that recourse to
going over the film's historical impact and the so-called "
controversial issues" raised to Often people after seeing the film for first time
.
Firstly, this is the film that began bodybuilding. It's hard to think
at a time when bodybuilding was not strange and unusual, but when
"Pumping Iron" was made, bodybuilders were considered unsafe
freaks with big egos. Culturismo ads were printed below the comics of
daily newspapers. People took as a joke.
Arnold is often referred to as the father of modern bodybuilding (
he literally started the whole madness that you see today), and a lot of people who criticize his intellect
movies and tabloid and sexual assault claims
forget that everyone is imperfect, but not everyone has enough autonomy and discipline
motivation to move to the United States from Austria, become the king of < br> bodybuilding (with the largest measured each chest - until today), then
moving into the film and extrapolation billions of dollars at the box office in
total, after becoming California Governor.
That's quite amazing.
do not believe that the majority of claims of sexual assault filed against
Schwarzenegger are true. (I am sure that some of them are, however.)
Interesting how they all emerged right around the elections, huh? But regardless of
if he is a womanizer or not (which I know he is, to some extent),
he is still a very impressive guy who participated in the gym and after school programs
during years, let alone raising four children, without ever
divorce his wife. (I'm not saying that the key to a lasting marriage is
adultery, however.) Kicking butt on the screen like no other guy in the history of film
action knock-offs. It will not be as its pale imitators
Stallone and Van Damme-but there is only one
Conan the Barbarian.
Yes, I admire Arnold Schwarzenegger, like millions of people around the world
. There is a reason why we started the bodybuilding
madness of the past few decades, as well as gross billions of dollars at the box office (
many of his films some of the larger pieces of movie action ever made),
that appear on thousands of magazines covers, and become Governor of California
. First, is superior to the screen where the majority of non-heroes: those who have
muscles bigger (see Stallone), a more likable personality (see Van Damme), and
- although many people will Critics why - I think his act is
quite good. It's easy to smile seeing one of his comedies and easy to have fun
see his macho man action films. "Commando" is one of the cheesiest
films ever made, but operates without Arnold?
"Pumping Iron" is not exactly a "documentary", as many were organized
only for the film, but as Arnie said earlier, most of it is true - < br> competitions, training, etc. The tension among bodybuilders, and
some dialogue, however, is not true. It is for all
cinema.
But this is the movie that made people flee to the gym during the 70's and 80
, and continues to do so. I myself am a bodybuilder, with a gymnasium built
in my house, and this movie is a great inspiration for me - there's a lot of
great source of inspiration in the material. And no matter if your sport is
bodybuilding or even a sport at all: the motivational message remains the same
for everything we do.
In a recent 25 anniversary interviews (included in the newly released DVD of the film
), Schwarzenegger separates fact from fiction. His
"psyching" Lou Ferrigno was only for the camera, so it was
statement about losing his car and do not return to his father's funeral because he was
training. Yes, he used steroids, as well as the entire world at that time because
were in an experimental phase and is not illegal. And he handles the biggest question of all
in two sentences:
Schwarzenegger: "Yes, I smoked a joint. And yes, I inhaled. "
Twenty-five years later, now also claims that when he said that the bomb
(blood flow to muscles as a result of weight lifting) was better than
"near - a woman ", just saying this to gain attention and to learn
people to lift more weights. "It's better than not coming," he says now.
"Trust me".
4 / 5 stars.
- John Ulmer
This was a very well done "documentary" on the men's bodybuilding,
1975 and the Mr. Olympia contest in particular.
The film, of course, features the most famous bodybuilder of all time -
Arnold Schwarzenegger. There are also profiles
its handful of competitors, especially Lou Ferrigno, who won notoriety for being
the green monster in "Hulk" television series.
anyway, this movie really shows the hard work (but not steroids,
by the way), dedication and the egos of bodybuilders in particular
Schwarzenegger. Arnold is the defending champion in the field and also
has the biggest ego and the picture is like a man obsessed with winning. (For
today, he has never lost something? Like him or not, what this man
has achieved is unbelievable.)
Ferrigno history is more about his dad than anything else, a man who lives
their dreams through his son. However, unlike other sports
driven by parents (ie, Jimmy Piersall's father in "Fear Strikes Out"), gives
"Big Louie" nothing but encouragement.
However - keep in mind, because I was fooled for years, too, until
DVD came out - it is that much of the role of fathers was made up only for
film, which is why we put "documentary" in quotation marks.
In fact, had little to do with his son training, according to a
feature on the DVD disc. There is a period of 25 years meeting with some of the
people involved here, and it is very interesting because it brought the
was added for "dramatic effect." (These filmmakers must have inspired
Michael Moore).
also appear in the film are several contestants in another
competition, Mr Universe, which was held at the same place as the main attraction
. Hence, we see a good guy (Mike Katz) battling bad (
Ken Waller). Katz was particularly intriguing study
and offers a good example of what motivates many of these guys to build this incredible
bodies.
Many of these contestants do so - and Schwarzenegger was a master in this
- the games are played in these competitions, trying to "psych"
their opponents. All this is pictured. The work
physical, mental games, the families of these boys, their
social life, the prospects in life, and behind the scenes to see a single
sports - all are fascinating. I thought when I saw this in the course
25 years ago, and still is a very entertaining movie.
