Academy Award and Golden Globe nominee DIANE LANE stars as a massage therapist who dreams of leaving New York City and joining her son's father, a renowned anthropologist, who is studying a primitive South American tribe called Yanomano or "Fierce People." She currently lives a carefree life in Manhattan, but when her son has a close brush with the law, she realizes it's time to make a life-altering change, and she pulls some strings to enter them into a life of wealth and privilege. When her son is attacked, their perfect world is shattered.

I attended a screening of "Fierce People" in 2006
Woodstock Film Festival. I hesitate to label it a "premiere" of any kind, since it is
shooting in spring 2004 and had its world premiere at Tribeca
in 2005. He played several festivals this year. Liberation seemed imminent,
then disappeared. Poof. Vanished. Or what appeared
course of the movie audience. Rumours of a play or DVD
have popped up now and then, but all proved unfounded. So this is the screening
announced. Perhaps one can call it a "re-premiere?" It is true that
felt as if I was witness to a buried treasure. And what a treasure it was.

I suppose we could characterize "Fierce People" as coming of age drama
. But it also has elements of comedy and tragedy, as well as
mystery. And a bit of farce thrown in. In short, real life. This makes it difficult to pigeonhole
, which puts more into the category of an indie
as opposed to a Hollywood movie. However, its high production values, big budget
feeling, and the star caliber cast seem at odds with the indie label.
So let's call it a hybrid. And, perhaps, why has "lost".
It defies categorization.

Meet Finn Earl (Anton Yelchin), 15, whose father is absent. In fact,
Finn has never heard of him. But he believes that he and hears him across the
collection of home movies shipped from South americas.
Dad is a renowned anthropologist, and has made a name for himself by setting up shop
with the Yanomami, the tribe of "Fierce People" who live to kill and, well, procreate
. All its activities are built around these two tasks ", and
Finn is captivated by him. Mom Liz (Diane Lane) is also somewhat absent.
Although physically present, she is lost in a world of cocaine and alcohol
. Therefore, Finn becomes an adult in his lonely little world with its
rolls of film.

One summer, Mom decides to drag her along with Finn in the wilds of New Jersey
. A massage therapist, mom has responded to a rich client,
Ogden C. Osborne (Donald Sutherland, a tour de force performance)
and has invited him to his house a broad call to his palace
farm. Osborne the "tribe" includes a variety of wealthy eccentrics
children, servants, and the village idiots among whom Finn found himself
part of its own anthropological study. Does your experience with dad
movies help you survive life as a visitor to this tribe? Are you
accepted? Or is it regarded as an outsider,
simultaneously struggling with their own identity as a teenager? Such is the material fairy
"Robinson Crusoe", and I suppose that this would be if it were not for the dark lower abdomen that
Griffin Dunne director and writer Dirk Wittenborn has instilled in
this magnificent history.

With Anton Yelchin the voice-over, intercutting parts of the house of Dad
films, Finn must learn to once again become the
teenager who never really had a chance to be leaving if the father to her mom, allowing
newly sober mother to be father to him, and learn about responsibility
way to adulthood the way it should have taken place over all. However,
It is necessary to make this transformation into a dark and dangerous world where
playing with fire is madness to this fractured family.

This is primarily a story based on the film and Griffin Dunne
stressed both in the intro of the film. Buying the rights to the novel
Wittenborn despite being written, and Wittenborn
own screenplay comes to life in the hands of the masterful
Dunne in a manner that is working wonderfully.

This is also a character largely driven film, and Sutherland
has never been better. His star turn as the Osborne around me stunned and surprised
probably leave too. Diane Lane matter ultimately
exhibits so many characters that it is hard to imagine another actor
pulling it out so well. She is impressive. But more than anything else,
"Fierce People" is Anton Yelchin the film. He has a long resume as
child actor, but little early as a teenager. Apart from the
little known "House of D" (also a gem), he is best known as the Byrd
in TV's "Huff." In January, will be seen in "Alpha Dog" (also
sitting on the tarmac since 2004, a film I saw at Sundance this year and
he is the "heart and soul"). His performance here
goes far beyond what one would expect from someone so young, and
is nothing less than spectacular.

This complex, peculiar film has remained out of sight long enough.
"Fierce People" is a treasure filled with light and shadow,
comedy and tragedy, joy and pathos, but especially surprising.
It's fun and good pace, although not all fear. The
music was quite disturbing and will take into account the film. Most of the
characters are two-dimensional, but the players did a good job with what
were given. I did feel much emotional investment for any of the characters
. The creature effects are impressive and they really only get a
view of the creature in a scene. Despite all this, I liked the movie and
see her again, although not for a while. The film was
only on one aspect, which I will not give away, so you'll have to see that
to find out. It is definitely worth seeing, or once they go out to
DVD.
