(crime, drama, thriller)
A middle-aged crime boss (Malcolm McDowell) smugly reflects back from 1999, narrating the brutality which made him triumphant - and feared. As an unnamed young hood (played by Paul Bettany) in Swinging 60's London, he seemed to ape his mod boss Freddie Mays (David Thewlis), and do anything for him. But his narration exposes all-consuming envy: of Freddie's supremacy, and especially his tall bird (Saffron Burrows). The baby shark develops his viciousness and backstabbing, scheming to be Gangster No. 1.

I've seen this movie to see Paul Bettany, once again. He enjoyed his performances in
and , and wanted to see him in
something heavier. Gangster No. 1 seems like the ideal role to see how he had
fare.
Mir large deck in Saville Row's finery, and have an unnerving
composure that suits the role. The crude language seems more natural
from him that McDowell Gangster age, or Thewlin Mays. But
scenes in which is supposed to be shooting with daggers in his eyes
Karen, his rival Mays' affection seems comical and remind me of all my
threat five years of age can achieve in his looks. There's a lot
lifted from other movies, but McGuigan

apathy means that we are seeing, not the Hammer Bettany intensity. <
Good Fellas> inspired the "Business has never been better" sequence, although
McGuigan lacks depth significantly, reaching three decades in
three minutes.
Some things too original: While a gangster falls in the 'Bird'
in this film, as in
undo, is what saves him. The first person perspective to Taylor
Goring works well, especially with melted in and out of consciousness. The
discordant flash-forwards to the Gangster fierce attack also work well. And I have never seen
c ***- word used more liberal.
What McGuigan, McDowell Bettany and above all do well is to show the emptiness of
truce Gangster bad lifestyle. His disloyalty,
jealousy, cruelty, vanity, his hunger for power and leave him paranoid,
ignored, and suicide. His touchstone of power and invulnerability Superman --- ---
and King Kong are not human, perhaps showing how such dehumanizing
physical invulnerability can be. But he remains vulnerable emotionally, and
harassment se basa en kill an old Mays' crew, Mays' girlfriend, and Mays
himself to fuel his fragile ego.
a film with some substance and style, but not righteous in this

What a cup! The harlequin mask of evil Malcolm McDowell, so familiar from the Bugey
Closeups him "mounching lumpchiks of toast" to
Clock
Orange, has matured into a fabulous ruin. And one of the pleasures of
glib,
slick, cocky, brutal, deep, and terrifically entertaining Gangster.

is in the awareness that McDowell McDowell is the same - his voice
have the same energy that Sneed had 31 years ago on the clock. He is the same boy
under a withered and weathered facade. As Gangster No. 1 - with a sociopath
a schoolgirl crush your head, spit-shined David Thewlis - McDowell brings you
in the succulent delights aged between corruption and long ingestion
brutality. No. 1 of nuttiness - a kind of Belcher of guilt, usually at liberty to
Francis Bacon-derivative shouts silent - it seems, for a while, as well as fun.
Paul Bettany, playing young No. 1, has a large, lizardlike, histriĆ³nico
deadpan - which keeps its victims by saying: "Look at my eyes!" as if something
deep fear and hidden there. (Instead, there is zero - a couple
No. 1 may be ignored.) The film has that jaunty and directorially
spicy, given his own shin-kicking nihilism that you can not stop
play along, until moralizing, but fully earned in its final states that
ear.
Not profound things - though not as deep as the excellent unself-reflective
head-smackers that formed by Goodfellas "crew. However, Saffron Burrows, as
cockney chanteuse loony in love with Thewlis' Mr Big,
takes you back to the days of much-posh and beautiful-of-its-British character parts
actresses. (Could Burrows, in fact, Susannah York millennium?)
And the director, Paul McGuigan, and maintain joint Bettany Jumpin '. Why did
get this crummy such liberation? There is almost nothing this year as sheerly
, undilutedly fun.
