Squid and the Whale (2005) **** Jeff Daniels, Laura Linney, Jessie

literary autobiography with a deep sense of humor.
filmmaker Noah Baumbach is back in form since his debut with the
excellent "kicking and screaming" (Fava personnel mines, a "Diner"
the years 90 ) In this semi-autobiographical account of his family
cope with their parents divorce and a bittersweet frankly
overcrowding witty humor.
Berkman's family Park Slope, Brooklyn around early 1980's, consists of
author / teacher Bernard (Daniels in a career high
performance that deserves an Oscar wink ), The mother literary under
Joan (Linney sublimely good) and the sons Walt and Frank (Kline and Eisenberg,
latter progeny of Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates make a striking debut with
Culkinian chops) and aka Chicken Pickle (her mother
nicknames). The quartet is harmonious in literary pursuits and
drastic changes in life when parents have agreed to separate sending
children (and ultimately themselves) in an emotional tailspin.
Bernard, a criticism very sardonic yet loving man, is having very
internally despite his sarcastic comments about everything their children

look for another shot of a sex life empty promise as yet undiscovered in his
writing talent (much to the resentment of Bernard); meanwhile
budding tennis pro wannabe Frank, the youngest, begins
to experiment with alcohol and masturbation.
Added to the mix is Lili (Paquin), a woman student writing
Bernard's, which has a hidden agenda when Bernard invited to share their new home as
one room, while children visit every two days
with mixed results. Walt is trying to initiate a sexual awakening and
with his first girlfriend, but that is all wrong advice comics
Bernard to CLUELESS with the opposite sex as he is also trying to have sex
with Lili, while burning more than that Joan has hooked
with Frank's tennis instructor Ivan (to which all other doofy Baldwin
wording is "Brother").
Achingly funny, very funny and skewering some
pricelessly funny moments including the operation of its gag Bernard
driving kids around the neighborhood ( "my space is missing!" , A suitable metaphor for his listless
situation) and subtle touches (Bernard reading Saul Bellow
The victim and the new home decorated with posters of films like Psycho
and mother and the prostitute and using the instrumental theme
Tangerine Dream to score "risky business" during Frank
sexual awakenings!)) put a smile if not an explosion of laughter in
discomfort of a family of transition reluctant that the scar forever.
Baumbach is clearly making a heartfelt valentine to his own upbringing
when his parents divorced during his adolescence and finally treat
affecting rub off universally humorous and bittersweet.
He has a great touch with his players - particularly Daniels,
central character, who is brilliantly funny, touching and
- shaking his head misanthropic to the absurdity of their situation (in a point
simplistic, says with a touch of melancholy, "which is my house that I used to live in
… as you know," his son during one of his jaunts
round-trip) that has echoes of his first role as fine Flap,
Professor of English philandering husband of the convicted
Debra Winger in "Terms of Endearment", suggesting a bookend to what could have become Flap
ultimately (and I'm damned if I'm not a right at one point Walt
is looking to his father's novel of the backflap and suggests a still photo of
that movie!). Bernard really cares about his family, but
such things in an ass-backwards (and frugal) so that is on the verge of

and familially) que en un momento me well up with tears as he caressed a

Daniels has always been one of my all-time faves and a serious underestimate
(and underestimated actor) is be criminal if not
an Academy Award nomination.
There are some very funny moments throughout with the brothers Frank
especially the flow of profanities in frustration at the
tennis lessons (no doubt the competitiveness of his father in several sequences) and < br> Walt stone-cold statement that the piece of music will be
performing Pink Floyd's "Hey You", was written by him as an original work
!
Baumbach has produced some fine work over the years (the aforementioned
masterpiece "Kicking & Screaming" on recent outbreaks of college graduation

auteur Wes Anderson in last year
also sublimely funny / sad "Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou ") and his latest, a mixture of
Salinger and Updike suggests a novel come to life and one of the
year's best comic plays.
Noah Baumbach takes a lover (oh?) Stab their parents divorce,
caused by the hilariously immature antics of her father, and my
writing professor, never the pompous Jonathan Baumbach (Jeff Daniels).
Brooklyn College is a hotbed of activism and liberal arts, when first encountered
Jonathan Baumbach (rechristened "Bernard" in the film, a wink Jonathan
Sly and mentor the hero, Bernard Malamud). The
arrogance and complete lack of self-consciousness is perfectly captured by Daniels
in excess of their top performance, surprisingly, the real underplays
father.
To call the image patricidal miss the point entirely;
Baumbach pere is so self-centered, he probably sees the film as a tribute
. Mr. Baumbach is a great writer, who receives good reviews in
literary magazines and books sold in the hundreds. Baumbach Jr.,
Moreover, it is a great filmmaker and his films (The Life Aquatic)
are seen by millions of people. I am sure the father is disappointed that the child is not

've seen this movie in a cozy theater of the university in the Toronto Film Festival.
I half expected to run into Jonathan Baumbach, in his leather
patched tweed jacket, acicalarse for the hearing and eying Coeds.
Funny and touching. You laugh, you cry, you want to choke
bastard.
