When his wife (Laura Linney) discovers a writing talent of her own, jealousy divides the family, leaving two teenage sons to forge new relationships with their parents. Linney's character begins dating her younger son's tennis coach. Meanwhile, Daniels' character has an affair with the student his older son is pursuing.

Noah Baumbach the semi-autobiographical story of divorce in the mid-1980's
in Brooklyn is funny and touching and rows
up there with the best work of Woody Allen or Sophia Coppola film bourgeois arrogance < br> where we are treated to the lower abdomen neurotic over-educated,
- indulged more, upward mobile urban middle class families. This is a wonderful film
imbued with a fantastic sense of place and time and
small details in which the viewer can find a great joy (as
hilarious scene where Jeff Daniels takes his teenage son and
child's new girlfriend to see David Lynch "Blue Velvet" in place of first choice
"short circuit" or closing shot real fighting squid
a whale in the city New York Musueum of Natural History).

Jeff Daniels is slyly funny as the cheapskate,
snobbish father who was once the toast of the literary world and is now barely above
education. Laura Linney is perfection once again (as she is not in reality) as
mother has just started his own brilliant literary career and that is a
too open about their sexuality with their children. While parents
Bicker over custody (even the cat comes to skate between two houses), the eldest son
out acts of plagiarism Pink Floyd in a show of talent and
nervous encounters with the girls (one of whom is his father-in vivo
student / lover played by the always fascinating Anna Paquin), and
younger son (Owen Kline a very good real-life son of Kevin Kline and
Pheobe Cates) turns to drink alone and public masturbation. It's all

as clumsy, real devastating and fun as it sounds. A
great script and even better acting highlight this story of a family in
skates. All members of the family is brilliantly brought to life
and despite the fact that they are acting in their own flawed, selfish, self-annihilation
and myopic ways, still Ende
the public as are our own family.

In a nutshell: Only a Philistine who reject the opportunity to enjoy "The
Squid and the Whale".
Almost a perfect movie. The whole world needs to see this.

Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney are both extraordinary. Factor in the
performances by Jesse Eisenberg and Owen Kline and this may be the most
well-acted film I've seen in a couple of years.

I've never enjoyed watching both Daniels. Kline, hits a home management
his first major role. Eisenberg's performance is worthy of Oscar. (Yes,
Daniels is great, but Eisenberg wins a Best Supporting Actor nomination
in this one!)

What I liked most of all is how some very, Humor is very delicate
brightly woven throughout this incredibly sad movie.
