Witness for the Prosecution is, as IMDb voters Cann faith, a great
film. An intelligent, character-driven courtroom drama, which deserves the
Academy Award nominations he received in 1958, and that just
has lasted until today. Starring the magnificent talent
Charles Laughton, Tyrone Power, and in particular, Marlene Dietrich, directed by Billy Wilder
, and based on the magnificent short story by Agatha Christie, this is
a combination of all the best ingredients, and offers nearly
a great movie.

The film focuses on the nature of Laughton, a year old, feisty, and very canny
English solicitor (lawyer) who is in poor health and headed
toward retirement. The opening of the film is absolutely
Laughton's show, as curmudgeonly and portrays a beloved character. On his first day of
hospital soon assume the defense of
Leonard Vole (Power), a man who is accused of murder and up against a barrage of
circumstantial evidence. The power is how to convince
honest and a little naive defendant, increasingly over his head. Soon,
Dietrich makes its entrance as Vole fashionable German femme fatal
a wife. After a few flashbacks to establish the history of the murder case,
Laughton takes up the case of Vole. What occurs is a well-written and well-run
drama about life, in which Laughton continues to shine,
delivering a convincing performance peppered with humor. Soon,
history is a series of dramatic twists, during which plays its Power
as the defendant plagued the handle and uses Dietrich
gifts that made her a legend. At the end, the public has been treated
for an excellent drama with the sensational performance.

The result is a classic, but not an icon in the sense that
Christie's short story, written twenty years earlier, would become. While it may be
the best of all adjustments considered Christie (Murder on the Orient Express
a possible exception), the film does not seem to have the stature
it should be. At the end of the film, I do not feel the same
that when I read the story, not just because I knew all along
the way they turn. With such talent visible on all fronts, I took a long
to see what it was, and what was missing. The answer: Christie.

The film is good in itself, but from the beginning is lost
crucial aspect is that the original story: the mystery.
Agatha Christie is the master of suspense, and throughout history, which
suspense, anxiety of knowing what will happen next,
eagerness to know where the next turn will lead, and shock that occurs at the end
, were what history is. The address of the film was
, the legal thriller, replaced by the mystery theater, and
while the film only adds to the story, changing very little of what
Christie wrote, the film lost grip that only she could create.
Christie treaties court proceedings (the centerpiece of the film
) with brevity, focusing on the intrigue surrounding the case.
Moreover, the Hollywood ending Overd a bit, and deprives the
most important plot twist of some of its emotional impact.

That said, however, the film remains a classic. Fortunately,
heart of the story remains very strong, with a single plot and rich characters
, which were exploited by Wilder and gypsum,
respectively. And, as it is, the film is a good complement to
history. For those who have only seen the film, the story should be read
to truly appreciate the value of the missing mystery.
To those who have read the story, the film nails the characters (especially
Dietrich's Mrs Vole). But to give this movie 9 out of 10, and
like to play again.
To see "prosecution witness" for the first time in 2008 is a
put a ceiling surprise. No one could do better than Billy Wilder
did in 1957. A man accused of murder, Tyrone Power, the weakest link in this chain
terrible. Sir Wilfred is called upon to defend him, is played by the extraordinary
Charles Laughton, but only outside the hospital -
not be dismissed was expelled - and because the doctor's orders him not to take
all the criminal cases. Recital Power
charming and personable enough but will not risk their lives to save her until
Marlene Dietrich makes its entrance - and what an entrance! How wonderful that
what amounts to a little Agatha Christie usual fare becomes such
entertaining and sometimes right down riveting piece of film-making.
