A beautiful film to see (nom Cinematography Oscar was well deserved). Fine
Result epic film. The right direction and editing. Some of the best costume
work ever put on film. Nobody today could even make a finer
of costumes.
Mel Ferrer is nowhere near the same league as Omar Sharif was in
"Zhivago." Sharif was great, Ferrer only average. Ferrer is a major drawback
. On the contrary, it shows tremendous ability to act Fonda (
not having read the books you can concentrate on their performance rather than
if you look the part). Hepburn is perfection and delivers a great performance
acting.
Yes it is a 1950's style film, which of course has some aspects date.
however, in the case of costumes, cinematography and some of the acting
you can not see better in a movie any time. This is an impressive
effort all around.
This epic has a reputation of being a limp, lifeless, mechanical thing;
a vulgar simplification of Tolstoy. The latter accusation is partly correct
and thank God for that. War and Peace, the novel has many great things
but also many excrescences: goes way too long, padded with
tediously detailed theories and philosophies of war, but also studiously
refuses loose ends.
there are flaws. The script, although a model of clarity (unlike most
literary adaptations, which focus on the whole range of large pieces,
creating confusion
narrative), but short inspiration. There is a disappointing,
unimaginative reliance on voice recordings, and unnecessary soliloquys.
The whole thing is also on the road too long.
Mel Ferrer is undoubtedly the worst actor in the world, who plays the dashing
, Prince Andrei tragic with all the vigor of a rusty table. His
part is crucial, narrative, thematic and symbolic, so
features in a lot of scenes in which their monotonous lack of expression makes the film
stop dead. Henry Fonda, in many ways ideal as the altar-ego Tolstoy
Pierre,
that morally we must move from observer to player, is often defeated by the
terrible dialogue, which makes this wonderful Actor seem clumsy and fans.
(Herbert Lom, however, manages to suggest great humanity behind the pomp of hammy
Napolean).
I only mention these failures to prove that the film has its critics
point. They also suggest that War and Peace is almost a masterpiece
for two reasons. King Vidor, whose work I greatly (and shameful)
unknown, directs this film with impressive authorized lightness of touch. The
pays lip service to respecting the great issues Tolstoy,
focusing especially on families, relations between parents and children, the elderly
traditional reactionary Russia, and the provisional impulsive young
towards < br> freedom.
say lip-service, because their main interest in the film is another. This
lies in the expression of the emotional life of his characters. For
although the film is a great historical epic, which works best as a national
melodrama. The characters, who can not speak in this
hierarchical society, is allowed a voice through the direction of the film, which Forsaken
literal realism, to tell us what is happening in their heads (and hearts ).
overstatement color and composition carefully contrived give us a second,
more subtle and personal history, the main surface narrative. This
could make War and Peace over labour rights, ignoring processes
history and the plight of the serfs, for sympathising with a caste of
the owners of slaves, but Hollywood was never very good at
socio-economic analysis.
of Vidor seems to be another major theme of man and nature in this regard.
has little interest in enforcing a true nineteenth century Russia; his
Moscow is as artificial as Sternberg's exquisitely THE Scarlet Empress, and its use
of architecture and space to show both the distances between people, and the
the unfathomable void of the soul, is positive Antonioni. With the
natural world, however, there is a real sense, beyond mere backdrop
landscape, which is unthinkable in any contemporary Hollywood movie. Mainly
a film about people and history, is eternal nature that watches,
the battles, deaths, retirements. In fact, is nature that keeps the Russian
people, compared with the massive military odds, and that is the nature frameworks
melancholy, yet we are hopeful of resolution. (It is also interesting to ask why
the heighth of the Cold War, Hollywood must decide to do a big Russian epic
? Tastelessly to evoke a "glorious" pre-Soviet past? Or
enjoy the razing to the ground in Moscow?)
The second reason to love this movie is, of course, the incomparable,
beautiful Audrey Hepburn. She is so right as Natasha (when I read the book
as a child, I imagined Audrey all the way through, without even knowing it
has played in his film), the savior of the book, as well as the film.
This is one of the great spectacles - its modernity and the truth blows away
dusty period conventions (in fact, in his first ball, which is the movement as a
' ; Adolescents 50 to his prom). His intelligence, vision, passion (and it is a
much more erotic in this movie that his followers will never give you credit for)
and grace are in perfect harmony with the design Vidor, and her scenes
have an extraordinary emotional force. She is the life of the film, and his
moral centre in the absence of a convincing Pierre. The film plods
a slow death without it. The film three trials moral events -
Natasha's, and Andrei Pierre, but theirs is the most poignant and tragic.
The change to sadness and understanding of gays and once vivacious
Natasha seems a terrible loss.
