(comedy, drama)
Cookie's Fortune unfolds over an eventful Easter weekend in the small town of Holly Springs, Mississippi. The town residents are peaceful, kind folk--with the exception of Camille Dixon (Glenn Close)--a pushy theatre director with an incredibly shy younger sister, Cora (Julianne Moore), whose estranged daughter Emma (Liv Tyler) has just returned to town. On the heels of her latest play, Camille is shocked to discover that her Aunt Jewel Mae "Cookie" Orcutt (Patricia Neal) has committed suicide. Terrified at the thought of how this will tarnish the family name, she eats the suicide note to make it look like a burglary. This set-up leads the police to one main suspect, Willis Richland (Charles S. Dutton), who also happens to be Cookie's best friend. Although the rest of the town is convinced Willis didn't commit the crime, an outside investigator (Courtney B. Vance) isn't so sure. As Easter Sunday and opening night of the play arrive, the truth comes out, revealing more secrets than anyone could have possibly imagined. Director Altman tells his story at a leisurely pace, beautifully recreating the eccentricities of small town life in this sweet-natured tale.

Altman should go to retirement, like Scorsese, and all other major
former directors that all waste their time with new material
.
This overlong, unfunny mess begins with almost half an hour of pure tedium
, in a sort of "Driving Miss Daisy" vein, with an elderly woman and her faithful friend
black. Absolutely nothing happens in this part of
film. I wish that they stayed that way, because once things start
happens is that when the film reaches really annoying. (Like Sting's song
famous line: "Life was easy when it was boring," or "This film is
easier when he was bored"). The overly familiar plot - already milked dry
of self-copy Hitchcock - an innocent man accused of killing
is too stupid. Also, sinks any chance that the gags and
humor can be, but the jokes are mostly mediocre so no matter
. The other major problem with the film is rather the "blah"
cast: Julianne Moore, Glenn Close, O'Donnell, "country" singer,
and worst of all - Liv Tyler . While Moore is convincing as a
semi-retarded woman, is simply annoying Close in another
- wicked witch-of-the-South paper. O'Donnell tends to be bland, while
Tyler is not only terribly miscast but a bad actress, too. For
Altman to cast their white, as some trash Southern girl is a crazy move.
Charles Dutton plays a very cliché: is ultra-kind, is pure goodness
and intellectually superior to almost everyone - without feeling
that way. And what an annoying plot points in the child's father
not want to hear what the child had witnessed. Furthermore, it should be
schmaltziness sporadic annoying than any film can do without. What
waste of time.
Ever since I saw "Gosford Park" I am convinced that Robert Altman
has real talent. The only Altman film I had seen before
was "ready-to-wear" at least a part of it, but enough to know that I liked
. So when I had the opportunity to see this film with
interesting title of "Cookie's Fortune," I gave it a try.
I thought that this would be a comedy about a Chinese restaurant or something (
The only thing I knew before the recording was that it was a comedy of
Robert Altman, which is where my confusion comes from).
It has nothing to do with what I thought, but I liked that, however ...
Jewel Mae "Cookie" Orcutt is an older lady who lives in a small town,
called Holly Springs. All residents are peaceful, kind folk, except
for her niece Camille Dixon. Cookie is a widow for several years now,
but she is not alone. Willis Richland makes all its purchases and
help wherever she can. But she is tired of living without her husband and
she wants to die. She was suicidal, but when the irritating and pushy
Camille discovers what his aunt had done, she decides to cover up the true story
, convinced that this will have a bad influence on the good
last name. Along with her shy younger sister Cora, whose daughter Emma
separated as has just returned to the city, she tries to fazer all hope as a robbery and murder. This will come
suicide note, hides the gun in the bushes and destroying some windows. The police
is convinced that the assassination story is true and that
start looking for a suspect, Willis. While the rest of the city is convinced Willis
did not commit the crime, outside a researcher is not so sure. But as
the truth comes out, more secrets are revealed that everybody thought
exists in this quiet town ...
guess it's the combination of naive and not looking people in the city
, beautiful story and fine acting makes this movie work. Of course
to wait to see some good performances by people like
Glenn Close, Julianne Moore, Liv Tyler, ... but in my opinion is Charles S.
Dutton was the most amazing of them all. Already
played some small roles in films well-known as "Alien ³" and "Se7en", but
is the first time I saw him in the role and I must say that I liked
.
In general, this may not be the most original movie, but it's a nice
comedy and I had some good laughs with her. Of course, is a bit
stereotyped, but that's not bad. This is a comedy and well used
stereotypes are always fun to watch. Add to this some fine acting and
a beautiful story and what you get is a comedy that certainly deserves to be seen
. I give it a 7 / 10.
