In the early 1950's, the threat of Communism created an air of paranoia in the United States and exploiting those fears was Senator 'Joseph McCarthy (II)' (qv) of Wisconsin. However, CBS reporter 'Edward R. Murrow (I)' (qv) and his producer 'Fred W. Friendly' (qv) decided to take a stand and challenge McCarthy and expose him for the fear monger he was. However, their actions took a great personal toll on both men, but they stood by their convictions and helped to bring down one of the most controversial senators in American history.

"Good Night, and Good Luck" is one of the best films of the year.
Beautifully directed by George Clooney (who also co-stars),
this is a film that exerts a powerful message and
social commentary that remains relevant today. Shot in the narrow frames of black and white,
"Good Night, and Good Luck" also brings the smoke-filled environment
of radio and television journalism in the decade of 1950. The
the film focuses on CBS journalist Edward Murrow and his attempts
withdrawal of Senator Joseph McCarthy through his news program, "See it Now
. "David Strathairn, playing Edward Murrow, gives
one of the best performances of the year and is certainly swimming in Oscar territory.
Clooney makes his biggest leap in the film industry yet. He, too, can join
Strathairn for an Oscar nomination, but in the best director category
. Filming in black and white, and interspersing
news conference with real scenes of McCarthy, Clooney is the new
talent worth seeing. The end and the last frame allows "
Good Night, and Good Luck" keep those who watch. It is very
ends abruptly, as if Clooney wants to show the defect, yet durable effort has
Murrow - the way it stands as a symbol for the continuation of truth and
its willingness to lead out to the public. The end has a very honest
somber tone to it - we want to continue Murrow that the public knows
what really happens in the country, but a man of
fight is not good enough. Clooney opts for a powerful and perfect ending. The
makes a bold statement about how public interest in television has contributed to the
decadence of society, whether it was 1950 or 2005.
This film is a true delight, with Strathairn dead on performance as legendary journalist Edward R.
Murrow a safe bet at least an Oscar nomination
. Perhaps the best decision of writer-director George Clooney
was nobody to cast in the role of Senator Joseph McCarthy. Instead,
Clooney uses images in real McCarthy hearings of Huaca and press conferences
. Movies based on real historical facts often
sensationalize events, but the extensive use of documentary footage
brings home the reality of this movie the story line.

Besides Strathairn best performance to date, the entire cast
offers from Clooney himself as Murrow's producer Fred Friendly,
Frank Langella as CBS president William Paley, Ray Wise as the
insecurity Anchorman Don Hollenbeck. If there is a weakness in the
cast is Jeff Daniels, who was given little to do in the role of
news director Sig Mickelson and did little with it.

As most people now known to the decade from 1950 through
of black and white images, the decision to film in black and white also consider appropriate
, And helps the scenes documentary mixture
perfectly with the actors filmed. The only real flaw of the film
is the lack of genuine drama. Along, Murrow and banda is deemed to have
the top, despite the sweat
about the potential consequences of each action. The piece of history, the ideas presented
regarding the proper role of the media, and the tremendous performances all over
compensate for this, however, and I strongly recommend this movie to
those who lived through the McCarthy era and for those, like
me, who have only witnessed in the rear view mirror.
