This is the most unjustly vilipendiado film of the year. Some critics that
themselves to be defenders of Japanese culture (
without fully investigating their case) and in the process,
betrayed their own racism. "The film is authentic because the actresses do not wear
matronly bouffants," says one. Riiiiiight. Matronly bouffants are a western
Stereotype! But in any case, some of them and some do not!
That's authenticity. I suppose critics do not know how to write reviews
without seeing the film or walking long before it is over (some of them, as
Jeff Wells, do).

Anyway, it is a fantastic film and more than worthy of
multiple Academy Award nominations - that can not get
thanks to the fact that so many people decided they wanted use the film as the sacrificial lamb
for half-baked debate on international politics, rather
consider pan-Asian casting for the main roles is nothing new
(the truth is House of Flying Daggers, Joy Luck Club and even
Crouching Tiger) and that this film production could represent
international cooperation at its best.

Heed Youki Kudoh and Gong Li RICHLY
developed in support functions. The men, while obviously not as well developed as
spend less time in the geisha quarters, still give
incredible performances. Ken Watanabe was excellent, but I particularly enjoyed
performance of the actor playing Nobu. Oprah is right in
the sets and costumes, but (among other things) make you want
savor every moment of the film. Some people have argued that the
bright colors do seem like a kind of Orientalist fantasy.
The truth is that this would only be the case if we saw the departure of a more sedate
a flamboyant Middle West, by contrast, the movie opens in a rather sedate
part of Japan, and then leads to more colorful
geisha district (which introduces this fascinating paradox of great suffering
in an environment of great beauty). We know that Chicago is simply
Rob Marshall's aesthetic to do everything
the height of beauty, even if it is a shantytown. God forbid should provide entertainment in
presented as visually spectacular! The film is by turns funny, moving
and, yes, exciting. Gasps in the audience for the film's third act
gave way to sniffles. Zhang Ziyi actually managed
any language difficulties, his face has this effect when emoting.
It is impressive to behold. If I were voting for the Oscars, I
definitely give at least a nomination. And homegirl
can dance, too! His performance and the film itself is not boring at all;
audience members laughed when she was trying to be funny and
sighed when she was suffering. IMO, too happens in the film so that it can get boring
; there is a solid balance between rivalries, the details
Geisha on entertainment and romance. In the final scene, everything
full circle. I will not tell you how. See for yourself.

My # 1 movie of the year. Brokeback Mountain, Chronicles of Narnia,
Howl's Moving Castle, King Kong and Grizzly Man does not lag far behind.
Looking over previous comments here, it is clear that this is a very polarizing film
experience, one that seems to make "Syriana" to shame
in that realm. Director Rob Marshall took a best-selling novel and
was a movie that, apparently, some people love and some hate
. Count me in the first category, but let me
engaged critics, too.

Firstly, it is not a typical Hollywood movie. Despite Western
popular misconceptions about geishas, no sex, violence and hardly
beyond that, there are about two and a half hours of women's problems
that many men can find difficult to relate to. This is not "
Desperate Housewives" or even "All my children. "This is deceit, betrayal and
rivalries as much as it is a girl who was sold into servitude
his impoverished family Japanese. Its also about
lifelong quest for love in a society where it seems people can not simply step
and make frank statements of devotion to each other. This film is
in a word "complicated" and that is going to turn some of americas
film outside assistants.

But not all films from Asia are raving about this movie well, some
thinking is a very superficial look at Japnese customs and other
incense that a film which is a major Japanese tradition
three stars Chinese actresses should. I can not comment on any topic,
because I know little or nothing of Japanese tradition and I do not know why
Zhang Ziyi, Gong Li and Michelle Yoeh were cast.
Have been seen before by the public americas, but are just movie stars
in this country, so it was not as if they were to get in tons of
fans to their names alone.

The only thing I can think is, the three actresses are good and
widespread evidence that in this movie. If Gong Li does not get better
supporting actress nomination, no justice. Zhang and
should probably get a crack at best actress for her work, too. The three

only illuminate the screen.

But I can understand in this era of political correctness, how some
feel offended by the casting and how others can complain
manipulation of matter Japanese.

All I can say is, the film makers face-offs and is a well
the guidance of his film to a mass audience (and americas, which means a
Generally poorly educated public) or "narrow casting" for his film
people very well familiar with the issue that goes fell swoop down at any
fails. But that when it comes to a topic as Japanese geisha culture,
is a fairly small audience in americas, too small to generate the kind of box office
a movie like this has to throw to pay for itself.
From a purely Anglo, americas, without instruction in Japanese culture standpoint, I think
Marshall made good decisions. I hope he has not slighted
Japanese culture too, but I think he has made a suspenseful, captivating, enchanting
movie that does something a lot of movies have not
in recent years.

gave us a complex central character we can all pull for the
film and why, thank you.

"Memoirs of a Geisha" is among my five best films of the year, hence,
now, and deserves a best picture nomination.
