A fairly entertaining family comedy, with almost no relation to the book or
previous film with this title. Steve Martin plays the father of
group of 12 children who uproots them all to go to the big city where a football coaching
expected job .. suddenly the mother (an amusingly bemused Bonnie Hunt)
is called away in a book of travel and Dad have to raise all children himself. Interesting casting has
Piper Perabo (star of the gloriously undervalued
"Coyote Ugly") as the eldest daughter, Hillary Duff as the teenage daughter,
Tom Welling (TV "Smallville") as the eldest son and Ashton Kutcher
having an unbilled role as Piper's live-in boyfriend ..
and poking fun at himself in the process. The remaining children are mostly of the unknown, but
cute variety, ... and the children receive most of laughter
with their different systems and screw ups, along with Martin's reactions to everything. The end
drags a bit like things are starting to get serious and the family is about to
falling apart, but as long as sticks to the movie pratfalls can be
fun. Grade: B
Tom (Steve Martin) and Kate Baker (Bonnie Hunt) have a
Baker's dozen - children, ie. When Tom, a soccer coach, received a job offer
a coach in college football team just outside Chicago, and Kate's book about
increased 12 children finally receives an offer of publication,
see things for their bright future. The only problem is that its 12
children do not want to move from his home in rural Illinois, and things
become almost disastrous when Kate has to leave for a couple of weeks
promote his book.
despite not enjoy Cheaper by the Dozen as much as the original version of the film
1950, the 2003 "re-imagine" is still a 9 out < br> of 10 for me (the original was a 10 out of 10 for me). It is a
re-imagine more than a remake, because although the overall plot arc
has some similarities, these are two very different films,
with very different messages, and very different types of families. Both are
rather cartoonish, which works for me - I do not require much realism in
my films. For anyone who is looking for something credible especially
Cheaper by the Dozen may not fit the bill.
The most important change from the original to the new film is a change of
to control almost chaos. In the case of Baker,
not have time to realise that chaos is derived from their lack of
discipline their children. While this may not be realistic (surely nobody
planning to have a family this large will realize that the discipline and control
would require not have their own homes destroyed), it does lead to a
many of the comic situations, and that's really the point here. Yes, there is
a message at the end put on the family first, but what the director Shawn Levy
you really want to do is laugh. My wife and I laughed quite a bit
while watching the film, so Levy met his goal with us.
My only minor complaint is that some of the funniest material in question
the eldest daughter of Baker's boyfriend, Hank (Ashton Kutcher
), and he was not only in the film is enough. The material on
Shenk, neighbors of Baker, was also fun and a little underused.
This was the reason for lowering my score 1 point.
The rest of the cast is good, though like the original cheaper
By The Dozen, barely know some of the children, but that is understandable
when we face to 14 characters, as well as
ancillary characters. Steve Martin was excellent, as always (I like his work in his
even less appreciated popularly films) and, although
Hilary Duff (Lorraine Baker and daughter) seems a bit strange in the context of the family
I liked his performance a lot, too.
There is something about her that I like, and not only its appearance.
