Humbert Humbert, a divorced British professor of French literature, travels to small-town America for a teaching position. He allows himself to be swept into a relationship with Charlotte Haze, his widowed and sexually famished landlady, whom he marries in order that he might pursue the woman's 14-year-old flirtatious daughter, Lolita, with whom he has fallen hopelessly in love, but whose affections shall be thwarted by a devious trickster named Clare Quilty.

An important part of Stanley Kubrick's genius was his ability to translate
a literary work in a visual style. It shows nothing more brilliantly than in
Lolita and A Clockwork Orange.

Lolita is perhaps the most impressive achievement, in the style of Nabokov
is complex and multi-layered. However, Kubrick captures the effect that
camera angles and movements, at the time and point of view.

The broader layer of Nabokov's novel, the parable of an ageing culture
Europe trying to revivify itself debauching of the culture of young seducer
americas, is really missing in film. But everything else is there,
despite the fact that the movie departs from the exact facts of the novel.

does not mean that the film depends on the novel. It is in itself quite easily
. But it succeeds brilliantly in conveying ideas and feelings
that are at the heart of the novel, and makes it completely in cinema
terms. If the films are based on the works of literature, this is the way to
do, and how they almost never done.

Kubrik Nabokov's version of the story of a middle-aged professor of
self-destructive obsession with a young schoolgirl. Making a movie that dealt
sex with minors was considered impossible in 1962 because of the strict censorship regulations
. Kubrik achieves this round of
simply referring to sexual encounters and subtle wordplay and symbolism creeps
in several scenes. It also raises the girl age 12 to 14 in the novel in
film. Lolita is also rich in Kubrik's trademark dark humor.

The three central characters of the novel are all over
adequately portrayed in the film, James Mason as Professor Smitt,
Shelley Winters as the suburban widow with pretensions of the culture and Sue Lyon as
young nymphet. However, is Sellars' performance as the creepy
eccentric Clare Quilty (a relatively minor character in the book) that
steals the show and ultimately makes the film. The opening scene (which is
the end of the movie) is a testament to his talent and versatility
. The scene said the film gives the same "circular structure"
used by David Lean in "Brief Encounter".

My favorite moments include; Quilty re-introduction to the film in the
summer school ball as the camera pans across the dance floor and subtly reveals an aspect
of comic ambivalence on his face as he danced with her lover, Humbert
awkwardly trying to book the only hotel-room at the police station
Humbert convention and once again trying to teach the joys of cynical Lolita
Edgar Allen Poe of poetry.

I recommend this movie depth. My only complaint is the length - the third
end seemed to drag a bit.
