(action, adventure, drama, history, war)
During the Napoleonic Wars, a British frigate, HMS Surprise, and a much larger French warship, the Acheron, with greater fire power, stalk each other off of the coast of South America. Russell Crowe brings great intensity to the role of Captain Jack Aubrey. Lucky Jack, as he is referred to by his crew, is well regarded by his men, who trust him implicitly, even after the first devastating battle and an apparent personal vendetta against the French captain. While the naval battle sequences are quite fantastic, the film is successful because director Weir chose to build the story to get to know the men who are locked aboard the tight quarters of a small ship and how they interact everyday. The officers and the mates are well-known by the time the final battle comes. Paul Bettany offers a strong performance as the surgeon and naturalist who balances the violence of his chosen life with the quiet demeanor of the scientist. He is the captain's friend and confidant, the two frequently playing violin and cello duets together. The horrors of the injuries from the war are frequently implied, but vividly depicted in the reactions of the characters.

A very complete story, interwoven with beautiful cinematography,
powerful performances (Russell Crowe, above all), masterly Result
(Bach, Motzart ... to name two), and a story with truly credible
many turns. At the heart of what is the conflict within Captain "Lucky" Jack Aubry
(Russell Crowe) who balances his duty to
British Empire and their personal relationships with friends and crew members on board
HMS Surprise. All this while playing cat and mouse with a French ship
enemy that is twice the size of ships and double its strength. The
conclusion is a great mix of elements common human cause and responsibility.
However, this is one of the best stories I've ever seen on screen
film.
Peter Weir has directed a lot of will-be-Oscar nominated by the films.
To me, this is not a merit for a filmmaker, as Oscar-dramas are usually
95% of entertainment, which in itself is not interesting. His style is very clean and
compromise, you're not surprised by the originality, but
can enjoy the professional touch you have in your work.
Another Australian, Russell Crowe is also a professional, but has some weaknesses
in his act, mainly caused by certain machismo
he desperately tries to keep all his characters.
rest of the cast was unknown to me and I had not read any
Patrick O'Brian books. But the sea itself, tall ships and the Napoleonic Wars
are, of course, a large base of elements in history, especially for a war
amateur historian and summer sailor like me.
surprised me, how really good Master and Commander was. A true
adventure! I enjoyed the whole movie and could not find anything that I would not want
. Things were different back then and Master and Commander
presents his version of the Napoleonic era. It seems very
rich and detailed. Undoubtedly O'Brian novels form a fine background
for the excellent screenplay. Banda sound is also very well done, and
musical scenes with Aubrey and Maturin play duo with violin and cello
their friendship. One of the best things in Master and Commander
heart is the friendship between these two characters.
It's like Weir and Crowe were born and trained to do this movie.
And obviously, I was born to see it because I've seen it five times so far
. A perfect gem of its kind. Oh, how I wish I could do a dozen
sequels, especially since the end was kind of open and had a sense of
below. If I had seen this film when I was 12
probably would have had a career in the Navy ...
