Carl Brashear is determined to be the first African American Navy Diver in a time where racism is strife. Leslie Sunday is his embittered trainer, determined to see him fail. Fate, challenges and circumstances eventually draw these two men together in a tale of turbulance and ultimately triumph.

This is a great one! Robert De Niro and Cuba Gooding
have come together to make a very powerful and influential film. This is the true story of
the first black U.S. Navy diver and the obstacles they face in achieving their certification
at the hands of a racist master diver. Along the way,
he also faces plain old bigotry of all his classmates, none of whom
want him in her class. They move away from the barracks where
arrives. Ultimately, it becomes certificate and will have a great career as a diver
U.S. Navy. Watch this! It's a great story of courage and honor
. As the story develops, we see racism
slowly dissipate and the whole world begins to respect the men one at a time.
I was curious to see how critics responded to this rousing, inspiring
movie, so I went to rotten tomatoes and was dismayed to discover that pompous
the peanut gallery that is our nation's film critics have given
the film from an average of 43% (or "Rotten") rating.

All I can say is, if this film does not move you, you have no heart.
(It is interesting to note that the same movie on the same website
earned a rating of 74% of viewers).

Not that the opinion of critics is all that important to me. After all,
I can not think of a more useless, in excess profession. Some schmo
paid to go to the movies (what a tough life) and
does the same thing everyone else on the planet does: a review. But these chumps
have a way to come across his view as well that somehow matters more
of theirs, and even worse, they love to hate.

I will grant that this movie is old (well, except for
f-bombs), syrupy, and a bit predictable ... after all, you know right from the outset that
Cuba Gooding Jr., portraying real-life hero Carl Brashear
Navy, will succeed (if necessary) at every step
simply for the way he comes to through: strong and daring;
strong will and optimism.

But his performance and De Niro (as Billy Sunday, a composite character
several real-life people) are so strong, so inspiring,
who will take over their feet cheering many of the scenes from the movie, especially
the courtroom climax. You must be a real stick in the mud
not to be moved by these scenes. Like our nation's film critics.
Michael Rappaport is excellent as well as a sweet-natured, stuttering
diving student who Befriends Gooding of Brashear. If anyone has seen
"Higher Learning", this character fully redeems that character.

anyway, this confirms what I have always felt: not listen to critics.
See this movie and inspiring.
