Helena, a 15-year-old girl in a family of circus entertainers, often wishes she could run off and join real life. After a fight with her parents about her future plans, her mother falls quite ill and Helena is convinced that it is all her fault. On the eve of her mother's major surgery, she dreams that she is in a strange world with two opposing queens, bizarre creatures, and masked inhabitants. All is not well in this new world - the white queen has fallen ill and can only be restored by the MirrorMask, and it's up to Helena to find it. The audience showed that for the Sundance premiere of this jewel
was very diverse. Some came by Neil Gaiman, some of Dave McKean and
rest of the Jim Henson Legacy. Based on my informal surveys
waiting list lines around Salt Lake City, everybody has
what they wanted.
The visuals - as expected from a movement involving
Henson's company - are simply breathtaking. Most of the film is the blue screen, which
is quite incredible for a film made by a mere $ 4 million. The human
actors blend into the beautiful painting-like background (google
McKean's art and you will understand that this is a feat), and fazer a job of interacting with digital characters.
Only 17 people - all newly graduated students - worked in the
animation, but the result seems to 170 professionals did.
Should be noted, however, that Dave McKean spent 18 months in post-production,
more or less 24 / 7.
The weakest part of the film is the story. Dave and Neil
came with the outline of more than 3 days, and worked into the details because it filmed.
The end result is a career factory Alice in Wonderland rip-off, with some elements of
Maze and other relatives of children stories.
I have to give extra credit to Stephanie Leonidas, who does a great job with what
Helena, a girl who gets lost in the world
his Picasso-Dali-meets - McKean brings together drawings, to life.
I hope this film is going to get collected to distribute movies, because
that deserves to be seen on the big screen. In any case, fans of McKean
'm happy to hear that a picture book MirrorMask is in the works that contain
the 1700 drawings produced by the film ...
If you get a chance, go see this movie. It should be fun for children of all ages
. When it comes to theaters, I will go see again, and give it new
A:)
This is my first review, so pardon me for any clumsiness in his
composition. As such I am nervous avoiding any discussion of the
plot, lest I spoil anything.
This is a continuation of the tradition of fantasy film about teenagers
transition of young women. Other films in this regard are
"Alice in Wonderland", "Paperhouse" and "Labrynth." The film was produced by
Henson Studios, and is presented as well as its other features, but instead of
elaborate puppets and games, animation replaces the
elements.
Visually I found impressive. I am familiar with the work of McKean, and I found this
for being among his best. It is clearly the style of McKean.
The use of color was phenomenal, as well as the composition surreal.
I was delighted to see their creations in motion literally, instead of the usual
involves movement. Personally, I thought you were a series of
visual references to other great films, but I will leave that to your
opinion. I thought that the address clearly demonstrated their understanding of
composition.
The writing was faithful to the tradition of off-beat Gaiman fairy tales. The pace was
dreamy, flowing between the moments of beauty and slow
exposure to moments of frantic action fierce. Funny, dark and
otherwise, punctuated the film. The dialogue was very strong.
I am also very fond of the use of sound. One is a frightening scenario
beautiful music and video, which can be drawn from the film
completely and carry themselves. It fits better with the movie, but not
necessary.
The film fits very well with all previous
Henson Productions. I suggest seeing "Dark Crystal", "Labrynth" and "
Jim Henson's The Storyteller" before seeing this. The piece fits very well with these
.
