Harry Langer (Nicholson) is an aged music industry exec with a fondness for younger women like Marin (Peet), his latest trophy girlfriend. Things get a little awkward when Harry suffers a heart attack at the home of Marin's mother Erica (Keaton). Left in the care of Erica and his doctor (Reeves), a love triangle starts to take shape.

Of the many things that I like to go to the movies there are two
experiences that always stand out more than others. The first
going to see a movie that is so-so and expectations to find out who is not only
more than expected, but very good. The second will
a movie that has high expectations and will not be disappointed.
Something's Gotta Give falls squarely into the latter category.
Sometimes, when are legendary stars joined in a movie, the result is often less than
passable. Not so with this movie, thanks to a strong-
witty screenplay and the direction of Nancy Meyers, two big stars to Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson
click wonderfully together on screen and an excellent
supporting cast that includes Keanu Reeves, Amanda Peet and Frances McDormand
. It is a romantic comedy that is fun when it has to be circumspect when
needs to be, and filled with many
sincere and touching moments.
Harry Sanborn (Nicholson), over-age playboy who has dedicated his entire life avoiding
serious commitments, is set to spend the weekend with his girlfriend
flavor of the moment , Marin (Amanda Peet), at a beach house owned
the mother of Marin. Unfortunately for Harry and Marin, the mother of Marin,
Erica Barry (Diane Keaton), which is a famous playwright, shows up for the weekend
also with her sister Zoe (Frances McDormand). Of course Erica
not quite know how to deal with the fact that his daughter is dating, and possibly sleeping with a man
Harry and the reputation of age leading to some very amusing
dialogue between Harry, Erica and Zoe rings that mounds of truth. It
these early scenes in the film that sets the pace, grabs your attention, then
never lets you go. Later, when it starts to get him to Marin,
Harry suffers a heart attack. Now I know that having a heart attack
not supposed to be particularly amusing, but here is some of the many hilarious scenes
that rock along the Something Gotta Give. When Harry is taken to the hospital
, we meet Dr. Julian Mercer (Keanu Reeves) who becomes a
great admiration for Erica plays and quickly develops a crush on her.
Of course, plot manipulations being what they are, Harry ends recovering
Erica alone in the house on the beach. Everything that happens from that moment
says it all about love, aging and, above all, how men and women are different
as they age.
I can not say enough about here Diane Keaton's performance in this film. For all
dramatic roles he has played, she demonstrates once again how truly versatile
which is still playing with this truly comic role.
Jack Nicholson as Harry Sanborn, is also perfect as well. It manages to take
character that we absolutely loathe for his behaviour and shallow fazer him not only likable but gives depth. It is perhaps his best role
comic ever. Keanu Reeves in a less visible role, shines as the young
Doctor. We believe in his sincere admiration for Erica and achieves
Saca of what makes us believe that this is not just a school boy crush rate.
For some short but very amusing moments, Frances McDormand
also deserves our praise.
Nancy Meyers has shown great promise as a director with the OK of efforts
The parent trap and what women want. As a writer who has had some fine moments
with irreconcilable differences, Baby Boom and the father of the bride.
Something Gotta Give, she puts the pieces of the puzzle together to
some first-class entertainment. You will not be disappointed.
