Set on the future earth, Johnny rico is a young student dating a girl named Carmen. When Carmen decides to join the military in order to become a class citizen (citizenship is only achieved through serving your country), Johnny follows and joins as well. He soon realizes that he joined for the wrong reasons but just as he is about to quit, an asteroid that originated from the orbit of planet "klendathu" hits Buenos Aires (his home town) and kills his family. Johnny and his fellow troopers set out to destroy the planet's inhabitants: a type of deadly and very large scaled space bugs. Through a seemingly ordinary action flick, director paul verhoeven creates a subtle anti-war theme, that shows us a fascist and military world far more frightening than WW2's Germany, Italy or Russia, the kind of world that is actually functioning.

One of my favorite movies, this.

I like the way Verhoeven approached the idea of Man v Beast. Our "heroes" are
beautiful white teeth Americans, firm body and morale;
decapitating our villains are stick insects, cockroaches and giant worms.

however, who are the real heroes?

teeth white Americans are meaningless, shallow thugs. This is in essence
a war with Bugs, whose planets, we are told, have been invaded by the Americans
. Mistakes are justifiably upset.

I could not help laughing at some of the "Nazis"
parallels drawn by other reviewers. What Verhoeven is putting everything in this movie is not a polemic
against Nazi ideology, but an attack on U.S. imperialism
in the latter part of last century. It is satirising americas crusades against other
countries, whose inhabitants are portrayed in the American press as no better than
Bugs. Has

Verhoeven wants to attack the Nazis, he could have given the good guys
German accents; he does not, he gave them the accents of americas. The "Nazi"
symbolism commented upon by other reviewers Nazi symbolism is not at all
- totalitarian symbolism, period. It's extreme right, "
pump back to the Stone Age" americas totalitarianism.

Why believe this?

Take a look at the American scene, where children are encouraged to stamp
cockroaches overly excited by a parent. Take a look at the high
five years.

Verhoeven has carried out a powerful work here. He has made a film that has great
action, a great film, very beautiful women (and children), yet the film still succeeds
take the mickey of the New Order in a fun and very < br> effectively.

The truth is that this is a brilliant film that, like the previous Verhoeven
"Robocop", is an insightful satire and critique of fascism and
at the same time as a successful sci-fi thriller. It can be enjoyed in
both levels, although it is obviously much richer when the viewer
covers the satirical and critical level as well.

It is not as if the satire is so subtle that it is difficult to achieve. In any case,
you hit on the head with it. But at the same time,
is very disciplined and consistent in his hand and deposit not give the game away
, what makes me much more successful and enjoyable that if
satire and social criticism were brazenly broadcast. That is the strange and wonderful
on "Starship Troopers" and "Robocop" -
a viewer could not totally get it, while another, the critical and satirical
is totally flat on his face and that is what the film is really

I do not know if I'm describing so, but watch out for
- the film makers' commentary on (in the DVD version), and director Paul
Verhoeven and writer Ed Neumeier lay everything very clearly: the
the film is about how the war makes fascists of us all. Very timely today
(2004) with U.S. imperialism wreaking havoc in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The technical point of view, the film is excellent. The error
special effects are first class and all the error and the hierarchy of society is deeply
thought through, as is the future of the Earth political society and technology. The
acting is excellent, and the balance between the characters' interpersonal
story line, the error history of war, and the underlying
political satire and criticism, it is perfectly handled.

A truly exceptional film, Verhoeven best so far, surpassing even
"Robocop" in my opinion, fully and it deserves a 10-10 score, I rarely
dan.
