A priest from the Vatican is sent in to investigate claims that a small town in Brazil has a church where statues bleed from the eyes. Meanwhile, a young woman in the U.S. begins to show signs of stigmata, the wounds of Christ. The priest from the Vatican links up with her and cares for her as she is increasingly afflicted by the stigmata. Her ranting and raving finally begins to make sense to the priest who starts to question what his religion has stood for for the last 1900 years.

Stigmata is a very interesting movie that is watchable participation
and thought provoking. It certainly is not a perfect film, but was excellent in patches,
and humor of the film just right. It was surprising that "non-Hollywood"
in many respects and very underestimated if you look beyond the blood of the
mutilation and stigmas scenes.
My only major complaint with the film is sometimes so ridiculous that
characters near Frankie (Patricia Arquette) seems ready to take her seriously or
cree his affliction, Even though he witnessed supernatural events
surprising at first hand. His best mate who told
chill out and relax because
was a Friday night, after seeing this event earlier in the week, bordered by high farce.
Without doubt, all doctors, priests and journalists in the world
would have been at his bed after seeing the video camera train on this event?
anyway, this side, many other aspects of the film were first class and I was pleased
the DVD version has alternates and, in my opinion, better ending
(Although the difference is subtle). Comparisons with the exorcism seems
cloud the views of many people in connection with this movie, and my advice would be
only to see it and take it for what it is. The concept is fairly original and
consideration of faith and the modern church is interesting.
Certainly I would not say that the film was anti-religious, actually, in many respects
which adds weight to the religious beliefs as the concept introduced
Stigmata phenomenon to the audience.
Generally speaking, very good, 7 out of 10.
The "stigma" is a Christian religious term that refers to the spontaneous
appearance of the wounds that correspond to the wounds on the body of Christ
when he was crucified. This religious experience is the most typically associated with
deeply religious people, and I think it is not one that is widely
taken seriously. What is interesting is that this movie shows the
appearance of these wounds as frightening, painful and extremely
ultimately
humiliating experience. There is nothing conventionally religious experience in the
portrayed here - in fact, the victim is an atheist.
But after leaving aside the conventional, the film is only partially successful in bringing
experience of stigma to the screen. The
the film is itself a victim of a conventional image of evil
Vatican bureaucratic desk jockeys repression "true" religion.
And I have to admit that as I was watching, I found myself thinking: 'Hmm, that sounds like
the Gospel of Thomas "- a famous Gnostic Gospel. Surprise.
But, in general, I'd recommend that as a cinema and a decent exit from the
generic, bland image of the Christian religious experience to the
Hallmark Channel or
"touched by an angel." It's a film that make you think
on the nature of religious experience and their impact on an ordinary life
