A well-known actor, who hasn't accepted a role in four years, is considering a project. The cousin of the director drives him to Archie's Ranch Market, in Carson, and drops him off to do a little research. He's fascinated by one of the checkers, Scarlet, a young woman from Spain with a preternatural ability to ring up items at the cash register. She hates her job, stuck at the 10 items or less lane. The actor chats her up, and when her shift ends, he asks for a ride. In the course of the afternoon, he helps her prepare for a job interview. She needs to have confidence, he needs to commit. Human contact, however brief, can change people.

Reviewed the September 12, 2006 2nd screening at the Paramount Theatre 1
during the Toronto International Film Festival. The film was premiered on World
previous day in the Elgin Theatre Vis Screening Room.

The basic plot involves Morgan Freeman playing time
popular actor who is in the downward slope of his career and taking on the roles
that may be below it, but that still does with a positive attitude
knowing that he has to pay the rent, etc. The low slope
is indicated by his being a long time between duties with the previous flicks in
negotiation DVD bins and his being a chauffeur am not very sure of himself
production assistant who falls outside Freeman
community in a local market where it is going to do research for a role as
Supermarket manager. Coming soon discovers the real market is led by an iron will
"10 Items or Less" request line secretary played by Paz Vega.
When Freeman's trip and never returned Vega need help to prepare an interview
circumstances the cause to join forces in
a walk in the city to get back home Freeman and Vega to obtain a job to get
as more mobile upward career.

Although the film has been pleasant, that felt like it was still a sketch or a
work in progress. There are two extended musical sequences (with One
Vega and teaching each other children Freeman songs in the car, one
that literally plays like a Paul Simon music video) that felt like filler to open the
time and even then the film was only about 80
minute.

It's a good thing Morgan Freeman as is, as it could not be like him is because
without him, this would have been too little. Sure it is fun in parts
and Paz Vega is also a delight, but there was just not enough here
to say that a film was complete.

I was lost when Morgan Freeman started talking about stopping the car
to ask for directions and Paz Vega said she never does. That
never heard of a guy who wants to ask for directions and women saying no?
In the real world is exactly the opposite.

is simply hilarious! One of the first bit when Freeman's driver insists that it is
Freeman's voice in a "Books on tape" reading is also quite fun.

The director / writer Brad Silberling and actress Paz Vega
were there for a brief Q & A after the screening. Silberling
replied to a question by saying that the script was not written specifically for Morgan Freeman
and that once took Freeman's role has actually changed very little
what was there. Quite a compliment for both Silberling and writing
also about how Freeman may just fall into a role and make it feel like to completely
was born to play.
I loved this little movie. I thought provoking,
and less entertaining. Morgan Freeman plays himself as an actor who is studying
a part of a small role. The employee chooses a grocery store
to study and becomes fascinated with his spirit, efficiency at work,
and attitude. Due to circumstances beyond his control, he jams
with it for the rest of the day. The two shared their philosophies
in life and become good friends. He helps overcome some of their fears
to share their life experiences and vice versa. This reminds me
the film before dawn, with no romantic overtones. Morgan Freeman and Paz Vega
give great performances. There are some moments of genuine
the film that I found very moving. It makes me wish I got to spend the day with
Morgan Freeman, whom I consider not only as a great actor,
but as a wonderful personality. A decent run time, great use of
location, and an unstructured way of shooting the film took a
home video feel. It works very well for this type of film. One
not be missed.
