Garbo won the first New York Film Critics Award for Best Actress this
performance and she is fine, totally credible as the
happily married wife and mother who lets have a obsessed with destroying his life. The
production values are first class, with some very impressive moments: the
opening tracking shot down the table laid with food, where the ball
cinematography, sound recording and editing all work together
to convey perfection scads of dialogue (must have been hell
choreographing this), meeting in the shadow and light fills the garden
the pool, overlooking the entrance to Garbo for the first time behind a screen full of water vapor
(Vivien Leigh note of entry similar tram). Completely
absorbing from start to finish and well worth your attention. Previously
available at MGM / UA Video (now out of print) and has just released on DVD to coincide with
Garbo centenary of the birth (9 / 05).
Greta Garbo brings great pathos to the role of
Tolstoy's tragic heroine, but is anyone guess why his Anna
attract even remotely Frederic March, stiff, colorless Count Vronsky.
Basil Rathbone, moreover, is everything he has to be the coldest of Anna,
unforgiving husband and Freddie Bartholomew is quite thin as his son.
Inevitably, the breadth total mass of Tolstoy novel
suffer somewhat in his transfer to the screen and this is more important in the film
of secondary treatment of the love story involving
of Kitty and Levin, who is all but ruled out. However,
this MGM production, directed by Clarence Brown, is absolutely participation.
With the very beautiful Maureen O'Sullivan as Kitty; Gyles Isham as Levin;
and Reginald Owen, Constance Collier, Reginald Denny, May Robson, Ethel
Griffioen and Phoebe Foster.
