Two sisters, plus a dead mother, a remarried father, and a hostile step-mother. The sisters, each in her way, have perfected the art of losing. The elder, Rose, is an attorney, responsible, lonely, with a closet full of shoes. The younger is Maggie, beautiful, selfish, and irresponsible. Her drunken behavior gets her tossed by her step-mother from her dad's house; worse behavior gets her tossed from Rose's apartment. Then, while searching in her father's desk for money to filch, Maggie finds an address; the past and the future open up to her and, with any luck, may open to her sister as well.

Pleasant, but slightly flawed, in your shoes is certainly deeper than a
-Shake chicken in the handling of the characters. Toni Collette is
excellent as usual, as well as Shirley MacLaine, yet I could not help thinking while watching
that should read the book and basa in
get a deeper look at these people and their lives. I felt the film could have
ido in more detail and I expected to be longer, as so many events
plot felt a little simplified to fit them all in a
2 hours running time. That is my main criticism of the film, but
was nice, in general, and I had a wonderful time watching.
A few other things I liked: the reference Rocky (my favorite), and
sequence during the opening credits. I credit it to
both screenwriter and director of this incredible opening, which provides
completely visual terms the film subjects. The titles are presented in
cuts between the two sisters, both stressing their
conflicts and their relationship with each other. In general,
has a nice balance between the dead-seriousness and light drama, but I wish there were more than
him to comment.
The fall season is when the smart movies for adults are supposed to
leave, and "In your shoes" is the first of this year.
a story about the rivalry between brothers and connections initially
not have much interest for me, but this is a good example of how a movie can
made well beyond the field.
This is one of the best action films of the year. Toni Collette
bears the burden of having to carry the film because his character is central to
history, and she does a great job. She is convincing as the frumpy
elder sister of Cameron Diaz, who always gets the kids, but
is illiterate and an alcoholic. Shirley MacLaine is the feisty, separated
grandmother. The film starts kind of slow, but gets much better when
MacLaine shows.
This film has much in common with a film that came out last month
called "Proof." That movie had a good story, but photography and poor
lead. "In your shoes" is like every table was
with meticulous detail. The address is done with confidence and
film does not suffer from the fast cutting camera angles so many movies these days
suffer.
It is no secret that this year's box office has suffered from the poor quality of films
. The success of "In your shoes" is a good criterion for
know if people will go to theater for a quality film.
If you've been waiting for an intelligent, moving film without
pistol shots from helicopters and persecution, "In your shoes" is a film that is to see.
