In 1936, the expatriated young and naive just-graduated British John Truscott (Hugh Dancy) arrives to the Sarawak, a British colony, to work in the Iban society. The beautiful Selima (Jessica Alba) is assigned to be his "sleeping dictionary", to live and sleep with him and teach him the language and habits of the locals. The reluctant John and Selima fall in love for each other in a forbidden romance.

While abroad, who had heard the concept of the film and the fact the
attractive Jessica Alba was presented but there was little chance of controlling the
real movie. When I returned to the U.S. late last year, I thought the film had
ido directly to video with limited availability (can not get in
Blockbuster, for example). I am glad that wound up buying a copy
(although I found a 'used' DVD half of the new asking price
).

It's a shame the movie never appeared in theaters as the visual effects
Sarawak
would have been great on the big screen and audio and music are well done and
have benefited from cinemas.

below is debate plot elements that might spoil for which TI
have not seen the film.

Although the overall plot line was reasonable and avoid cliché, there was a

number of disconnections as far as I am concerned.

Truscott with the dilemma of Bullard after the miners' slaughter
comes too abruptly and represents some sort of confession Offscreen. Since this is a
central conflict in the drama, which really deserves more
explanation.

Similarly, the "one year later" jump to marry Truscott Cecil Bullard
lacks sincerity. Why Truscutt marry the daughter of those who
cuneiforme
away from his true love? While one can imagine several possibilities,
the lack of justification on the screen left me unfulfilled.

Finally, even after the conversion of Sarawak and its people, Truscutt
is still too
a proper English to leave a credible pregnant wife. Some

sympathy he had built for lovers of the forbidden was undercut by the way this was handled
. It would have been much better for Cecil to push a reluctant
Truscutt away.

however, these plot points are relatively small compared with a film,

cast and cinematography that went far beyond the small budget and unheralded
distribution. I rarely buy videos or DVDs, because I think that rarely go back
to play, but I'm going to enjoy this property.


I watched this movie after reading the comments made by others i
here and say that I have enjoyed thoroughly, even if i am, outward,
perfect example of emotionally repressed men.

First, it is not going to win Oscars for nothing, but actually
really is not the point at all and nor should it be. It is a soft, almost passive
, love story that focuses on the characters on the uses, but
their respective background and constraints of their society
expectations as a character in its own right. All at a time and place
sufficiently remote to suspend disbelief, but close enough to
allow the viewer to relate to.

is well written, directed, filmed and acted with actors
deliver more than enough that the proceedings are sufficient to
really care what happens to them.

To repressed men, like myself who is considering seeing this film
from the obligation to his girlfriend, was not disappointed you most likely enjoy
if it allows you to . If nothing else
the lovely Jessica Alba continues to enchant the audience with nothing but male
screen presence and some scenes of their lack of clothing.

For women and men not repressed, I recommend this movie to you, not as
classic, but a sweet, charming and humorous love story. You
no doubt see the film only once, but then repeated viewings
add little.

is what it is and nothing else, but for a movie of this type that
everything that should be and that's all it tries to be.

For this reason, and this just gave me this movie 9 / 10 to
achieved what they have been established for achieving
