Finding yourself brooding over the lamentable state of civilization lately?

If so, I strongly recommend that you take a trip to `Gangs of New York 'and
see how things much worse than it was in the not too distant past. The

Martin Scorcese film is the epic tribute to the anarchy that has made americas

Visually, the film is a masterpiece, which offers some of the best
cinematography, art direction and costume design of any film released in 2002
. With the help of some master craftsmen, Scorcese has created a world
complete in itself, one that does not look quite like anything that
have never seen before in movies. The establishment has an incredible mix of

the real and the surreal, with everything from buildings to clapboard
feet tall hats are derived from its style extrapolated exaggeration.

This is truly an amazing, eye-popping progress.

The same can not necessarily be said for the rest of the film, however.
Based on a story filed by a former film critic Jay Cocks, the screenplay by Steven

Zaillian, Kenneth Lonergan and Cocks itself never reaches the level

of greatness promised by the establishment. The main drawback is the story
itself, which is basically just a trite melodrama of revenge all Gussi

Bill and make pay for his crime with his life.

despite the glories of the setting, Scorcese is never able to bring itself
history to life. Perhaps DiCaprio is too weak and passive to
fazer uma very convincing foil for the hard-as-bill cutting steel (which seems

largely derived from Dickens' Bill Sikes character in `Oliver Twist ', a literary
source that never seems too far from the minds of the authors of the film).
Perhaps Daniel Day-Lewis is too convincing in the role of villain to make it look like something
even close to a match. Perhaps, too,

the mandatory romantic plot involving DiCaprio chapter with a miscast
Cameron Diaz is simply too Hokey to fit into the sad history that is said here.
Whatever the reason, the core of the film turns out to be the weakest element of
`Gangs of New York '. Moreover, the dialogue is banal
absolutely and without inspiration, consisting mainly of syrupy platitudes and a half
oven to philosophize. Lucky for us, then, that the director has given us

with enough visual stimulation to keep at least intrigued, if not quite fascinated
, along.

What does fascinate us, however, is all the historical detail that permeates

outside the margin of history. These include the ubiquitous backdrop

of the Civil War, which keeps invading the world these people inhabit

and anti-war riots that tore nearly the entire city of New York apart - both

that filmmakers used as a kind of macro comment on the girl
battles and rivalries that take place in this hellish in the city. In

moments like these, `Gangs of New York 'almost touched greatness. Besides

interest is how the film emphasizes the fervid anti-immigration

attitude that has permeated the entire history of a country which, in a
perplexing paradox, has always prided itself (in theory at least, if

not always in practice) to be the `big melting pot 'of the world
oppressed and marginalized to flock to -- And the film reminds us how

prevalent anti-immigrant attitude that is still in many sectors.
Indeed, some things never change.

Somehow, this movie could make an interesting companion piece
Scorcese's Casino "," on which both films deal with the issue of
anarchy and
Corruption making way for legal conformity and respectability.

Each of these works, so distant from each other in time and place, get
describe the kind of epic labor pains that cities and countries often have
to go
through before they can truly be called civilized. "
This issue is undoubtedly what led Scorcese to compose a kind of visual ode to New York City
in the closure of his shooting, his own personal valentine to a city that

has suffered greatly in recent years. It's his way of saying that, since

these wretched beginnings, New York City has grown into the great cultural center
it is today and you can be proud of its heritage and
People who helped make it. Following the events of 9 / 11, which is very
powerful sense of agitation and indeed.

Yes, `Gangs of New York 'is a film very deficient in many ways, but it

is also a work of vision and almost unparalleled technical
Achievement
that deserves to be seen. Even if there is not much here to start

mind or heart, there is always room for visual feast to the glorious visions
developed there on the screen.
Daniel Day-Lewis elevates this film just "good" to "very good" or even
"excellent." He is absolutely fascinating, one of the most interesting
"villains" I've seen in the film. Sorry Day-Lewis
not won the Oscar for his performance. He was just outstanding
watch. His facial expressions just cracked me!

Day-Lewis played "Bill" the butcher "Cutting" is a nasty dude.
However, there is no real "good guys" in this story. The alleged
hero, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, is a revenge-seeking man with a ton
defects itself. The rest of the characters are either thieves, gangsters
members, corrupt politicians or corrupt police. Ah yes, another
family-oriented film that director Martin Scorcese kindly.

Scorcese What it lacks in family values, he is about to fill
in style. This is another fascinating film with great visual sets, costumes
, color and camera work. Other typical Scorcese is played in
here: Catholic-language and brutal attack. (I wonder if the
f-word was used in the days that this film takes place).

Ultimately, a hard film that might be too unpleasant to see, but for
Lewis awaiting execution and spectacular visuals.
