1989, South London. Jack, an ebullient butcher, has died, and his last orders are to cast his ashes off the Margate Pier. His wife of 50 years, Amy, stays home, with the excuse of a visit to their mentally-disabled daughter. Jack's three closest friends, Ray, Vic, and Lenny - along with Jack's son Vince - head for Margate. Each has memories of Jack and of friendships, family, and conflicts. It's Vince's relationship with his dad that's the most complex, and Ray's long friendship with both Jack and Amy that holds things together. The last orders - to go to Margate and strew the ashes - become an invitation to recall what's done, what's left, and what's important.

When you reach a certain age, especially when a catalyst is always appropriate,
can become a habit to study and reflect on one's life has lived -
to take stock, so to speak. And certainly the death of a long time,
or close friend can associate this effect catalysis, which is precisely what happens in
"Last Orders', directed by Fred Schepisi, a drama that < br> suggests that perhaps the end of a life can offer a valuable perspective and renewed
those who will write a new chapter of their own in this great book that
affectionately known as the Human Comedy. Lastly, this is
individual and resolve beginning to be found in endings, and life
it reserved for those who still can count themselves among the living.

Jack (Michael Caine), a butcher working class in London, scheduled for one day
retire with his lovely wife, Amy (Helen Mirren), on the seafront village
Margate. As often happens in life, however, Jack was denied
the realization of his dream of unbidden intervention of fate, as is
eternal emissary, the Grim Reaper. However, Jack goes into his eternal sleep
even as he lived his life, one step ahead of the other person, and
achievement of his final starts with the desire to send their ashes to his three
closest lifelong friends and his son, Vince (Ray Winstone), along with a request
Calls to him and a group of honor. And so
Vince, Vic (Tom Courtenay), Lenny (David Hemmings), and Jack's best friend,
Ray (Bob Hoskins), established on a trip to effect orders `last ' ;
his good friend, Jack, a trip that will take in the future through
the past, and to reflect on what has happened before, and the possibilities
that now lie ahead.

With this movie, Schepisi has developed and delivered what is essentially a
point in time, a time when it examines through a sentimental journey fraught with all blows
and stoicism truths that shape the lives of Jack and
presents the same way that Jack lived. And a sentimental journey, although it may be
not wait to see through pink glasses. As the story develops
, what emerges is a portrait of an individual complex formed by the countless
and many facets of the human condition. And every flashback, combined with an episode of
Today reveals another piece of the puzzle that was
Jack, and the final image we have of him is complete. We
for him and that what really was good, bad or indifferent, with all
foibles and flaws that are part and parcel of the ebb and flow of
his life - everything that defines him as a human being. Moreover, insofar as the
story is told through the eyes of their friends and loved ones, it necessarily follows that
was revealed, also, and especially Amy Ray. We extend
namely Vince, Vic and Lenny, of course, but some minor
degree. In the final analysis, then, what Schepisi has created
here is nothing less than an intimate and incisive character study through which
Jack, his friends and his story comes vividly to life. Schepisi does
material proud, but then was, of course, offered by the talent of a joint
extraordinarily talented cast, which draws
memorable performances.

As Lawrence Jamieson in 1988 the `Dirty Rotten scoundrels, 'he was the most
suave and sophisticated gentleman (albeit with men) screen has seen since
Niven or Grant, but without a doubt, since its image from "Alfie",
in 1966, Michael Caine has been everyones favourite cockney, and nobody - nobody fazer - did better. And that is precisely the nuances of character that
Caine brings to his image of Jack that makes it so alive and
convincing. Caine can be ingratiating even when you're playing a 'hard' guy,
and there is a decidedly hard side to Jack, but there is a very careful
Jack, too, that Caine also gets transmitted easily, and what
done a splendid job of merging the many sides of his character in a very real
whole. It's the sort of first-class performance we've come to expect from
Caine, and that makes his character and the movie
totally credible.

When it comes to playing cockney, Caine may be the king, but Bob Hoskins
is undoubtedly the Crown Prince, coming in a second post. These two, in fact,
to clean the Oscars if ever decided to include the categories of Best Best
cockney and cockney. Sometimes, perhaps, when
in turn have heard in understanding what you're saying, but
is part of the charm and viability of their respective portraits. And Hoskins
has an appeal to all yours, but lacks the charisma and Caine, who has a screen presence
Ultimately, all of which contribute to making the relationship between Ray and Jack
credible.

The wonderful Helen Mirren, meanwhile, becomes a very poignant performance as Amy
. His image carries easily
internal conflicts and complexities of his character to the fore, as Mirren shows us successfully
the many faces of this woman, who is wife, mistress and mother, all in
one. Most importantly, his Amy is so human, there is an earthiness to it,
but is tempered by his mother and most caring instincts, and that lends itself
a honesty and integrity to the character that makes it very Real.

Courtenay, Hemmings and Winstone in turn, include performances, too, each
making the maximum screen when it is offered, successfully establishing its
characters and the nature of his relationship with Jack
well as each other. All this is part of what makes' last order 'tales
attractive and entertaining film, a film that is both sincere and
unforgettable. And that's the magic of cinema. 9 / 10.






This act of the highest order of a British citizen dream cast.
The pace is slow, sad tone, the trip well worth it. Why not
Oscar nominations? This is so-Hollywood, is a balm for adults who want
