Joe, a rootless young drifter, finds work on a barge travelling between Glasgow and Edinburgh, owned by Les and his wife Ella. One afternoon they discover the corpse of a young woman floating in the water. Accident? Suicide? Murder? As the police investigate and suspect is arrested, we discover that Joe knows more than he is letting on. Gradually we learn of Joe's past relationship with the dead woman. Meanwhile an unspoken attraction develops between Joe and Ella, heightening the claustrophobic tensions in the confined space of the barge.

The films focus on translating the novels first person perspective
is clearly an obsession of this director. It is never allowed
the public attention away from Joe's point of view. We see only what he sees
, we heard nothing more and remember his life in little arrebata,
moments of darkness and secrecy repugnant that maintains the clarity of the world.

The film begins with a corpse, a woman dressed just floating in the Clyde
that is fished out by Joe, a young man working for the barges
reasons that are not immediately apparent. This brutal that from

And this is the movie in a nutshell. A relentless nature of a study
unpleasant man who punishes those around him for their own failures. Yes
there is free sex in this movie, but is instead defined
moments of change around the world life while underlining the
static character of Joe, played with absolute brilliance of Ewen McGregor.
Sex is cold, rather than erotic, reflecting the contempt
characters for which he uses. Without the detailed sex scenes from the movie
would be less than it is, but the public expects that titillated
come away disappointed.

not without flaws this movie has that title and a disconcerting scene in which Joe
beats his girlfriend after covering her with custard. The
scene escapes the film and the character of Joe who does not
indication of being violent, rather a man who goes out in a
problem instead of addressing the terrible possibility of confrontation. In fact
Ewen McGregor seems embarrassed to play this scene, as if too
can not link this explosion to the character being played.

But this minor quibble aside the film remains an artistically shot
work, played brilliantly by all. Its rare to see a movie where the entire cast
are bright, where the script is clearly cutting
and direction in all its aspects. The visual aspect of the film is also tremendous
with every shot that sat in front of us as a
painting, a wonderful work of art that moves and flows show us the
60 of the Brittan postwar with absolute clarity.

Hollywood, please take note.
