40 years ago, Don Haskins went on the recruiting trail to find the best talent in the land, black or white. 7 blacks and 5 whites made up the legendary 1965-66 Texas Western Miners. They were mocked and ridiculed for their showboating and flaunting of black players on the court. Yet, in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, Haskins and his Miners came together as a team united to reach the National Championship game against powerhouse Kentucky.

I saw this movie on December 22 in Indianapolis. I am one of those
judges for the Heartland Film Festival which screens his films
Truly Moving Image Award. A real movie clip "… explores the human journey
artistically expressing hope and respect for the
positive values of life. "Heartland gave that award to this film.

1965 in Texas, and a new, young, white basketball coach Don Haskins
, receives his first chance at a Division I coach of men's basketball team
, West Texas . There's a lot going against him. His past experience
coaching is a woman's basketball team, and the school has a tradition of basketball
bad, and he can not recruit good players whites.
But he is determined to succeed. And, do not see color when
evaluates talent.

Forty years ago, virtually no black players in college
South. There was even an unwritten rule that you can play at 1 black
time at home, 2 on the road, and 3 if they were losing badly.
Don Haskins recruits blacks in Northern cities, and brings them to
West Texas to play basketball and, as important, for students ..

The road to glory is not easy, and there are many obstacles. The black
players have to adjust to a strict coach who wants to play
fundamental basketball and not street basketball. The black players
face subtle and openly against racial prejudice. And the school administration,
alumni and students are not quite sure his coach is doing the right thing
.

The black players, white players, and Don Haskins big screen
human traits, since persevering throughout the school year and
basketball season. They are courageous and heroic, even in a large meeting
challenges. The sacrifices to achieve their goals. And
maintain their dignity at all times.

This is a "Hoosiers" with a conscience. The production quality and
act is equal to "Hoosiers". And like "Hoosiers", se basa
in a true story.

Firstly, it is too similar to remember the titans, but I liked that movie
two. The only thing that bothered me about this movie was
that the elimination of some important facts.

Texas Western Black had three players in the team already, Don Haskin
arrival. Don Haskin's was not the only person who leads a movement
to recruit black players. In his lecture, which played
many teams with black players.

Loyola of Chicago, but not on the ground 5 black starters, four on the ground
and won the championship in 1963. Therefore, despite
Texas Western was the first team to win with all black starters, mainly black
other teams have won earlier.

At the end of the film, talk about how people felt
black players could never be as good as white players. Even though the film shows,

sport.

Again, this is a good movie, but I felt a little disappointed that
manipulated the story a bit for the sake of entertainment.
