On the east coast of New Zealand, the Whangara people believe their presence there dates back a thousand years or more to a single ancestor, Paikea, who escaped death when his canoe capsized by riding to shore on the back of a whale. From then on, Whangara chiefs, always the first-born, always male, have been considered Paikea's direct descendants. Pai, an 11-year-old girl in a patriarchal New Zealand tribe, believes she is destined to be the new chief. But her grandfather Koro is bound by tradition to pick a male leader. Pai loves Koro more than anyone in the world, but she must fight him and a thousand years of tradition to fulfill her destiny.

While the 1994 "Once Warriors" was a violent seeing this
Maori culture is easily more optimistic and lyrical. The story begins at a hospital where a mother
just given birth to twin male and twice dies like the
mother. The rest of twins is a girl and the film is about her and how she thinks
and wants to be the future leader of his people. The film is set in
today and see the girl Pai (Keisha Castle-Hughes), as 12 years
he knows that his twin brother who died was supposed to be the future
head. Pai's father is Porourangi (Cliff Curtis) and he is an artist who has
left the village for a career and Pai is raised by his grandparents and koro
Nanny (PARATENIC Rawiri and Vicky Haughton) and craves respect for
Koro but he is old ways and is still looking for a new boss.
She wants to learn the ways of being head koro but yells at her not to fool with
sacred forms of its people. Women are treated as second class, but
Pai eavesdrops on koro classes with young boys and learn shapes.
The film is directed by Niki Caro and his only his third film, but this
should put on its list as everyones a great future leader. The
the film is beautiful to watch and although its not a big budget movie
history and images that make this an unforgettable visual experience.
Caro does a wonderful job of allowing the story to tell itself without relying on plot contrivances
. Despite that history is a fable that still comes across
that is relevant and credible. One scene in particular stands out the
and his Pai where is receiving an award at school and she has invited koro
your watch, but he instead make the entry, has discovered something koro
more important. The performances are magnificent and
Castle-Hughes gives I think one of the best shows of the year.
What makes it so surprising is that his film debut! You might think you were watching a
seasoned actress but its not! She is incredible to see
and in some scenes she comes across as so strong desire, but then in other vaccines
she's just a fun-loving couple. Castle-Hughes
expresses so much pain and shame, and who dreams of being a boss. A remarkable performance that
crucial to the film. Without their action movie is going to come across as
more distant emotionally. The images from Castle-Hughes in the back of the whale
since submerged are so disturbing and beautiful and
these scenes that give it a lyrical quality and emotional impact of the story is impossible
to ignore. This is more than a film is a visual experience
that everyone must see! Beautiful, disturbing and a performance that
never forget him. See!
The beautifully filmed and acted convincingly
to treat the entire family. Adults do not have to be careful because the film respects its audience and
contains deep levels suitable for all ages. Although ultimately a film
optimistic, there are some grim plot elements that can not be
fit for smaller children or overly sensitive. However,
no real violence or something truly frightening or morbid.

This is the story of 12-year-old Maori girl who knows she is born
for the fate of his grandfather died cree

with details, but suffice it to say that history lesson final
is that change is sometimes as a necessary component of life
traditions as repetitive ceremony. And that Maori who must travel

continuity of the cultural matrix of the modern world.

"politically correct" censorship. It should be shown in classrooms around the world
. Keisha Castle-Hughes is unforgettable as heroin, and
deserves the Oscar for that has been proposed.
