Although achingly literary at times, moments of real emotional power
are provided by fluid storytelling, the Nestor Almendros
disturbing film, Marvin Hamlisch quietly making the score, playing a
performance by Peter MacNichol And a performance by seminal
Meryl Streep, one that Kim Stanley (the famous actress / Oscar
appointed professor and mother to Jessica Lange in 'Frances' in the same year)
proclaimed, "titanic the image of his generation."
No matter what your initial feelings about this movie, I encourage you to go back and take
Streep in the dark dance of loss, madness and,
Finally, painful redemption .
We never were forced to witness such inhumanity and terror as
those who survived the Holocaust, may very likely never catch it meant
indescribable and must have been. Director Alan J. Pakula
tried with this film brings us closer to despair, as a witness for the
struggle of a woman to survive and how they can not live with her
decisions.
Sophie story is narrated by Sting (a very young Peter MacNicol), a
writer who moves to New York and quickly befriends his new neighbors
Nathan (Kevin Kline) and Sophie (Meryl Streep). Sophie survived
Ausschwitz, drinks and much more is completely dedicated to Nathan, who
now and then, it was terrible moods. They all become good friends, but
Nathan, while it seems to go deeper and deeper into madness tells Sophie
Sting occasionally parts of its history, how they survived and what
a terrible choice that had to do.
Usually I reveal what the choice is, but for me it's one of the most chilling moments
I've seen in the film. It's too late revealed in the movie
, at a time and following that Sophie, despite being a
rather naive and weak in character, but we care so much for herself as
happened to us. Although
MacNicol and Kline are both flawless in their respective parties,
the film is dominated by Meryl Streep, requiring attention at all
the scene in which she (and is Exquisitely photographed by cinematographer Nestor Almendros
). She's funny (the movie, despite the grim and depressing
history, is very happy), exciting, beautiful, but at the same time
that always seems to be sad, like a cloud that hangs over the
his head.
The end of the movie, however, is sad, is not at all depressing,
because somehow we feel throughout the movie, Sophie
that was doomed from the beginning, there was no other solution and that this
which is probably more peaceful for her to go on and on.
