Sophie is the survivor of Nazi concentration camps, who has found a reason to live in Nathan, a sparkling if unsteady American Jew obsessed with the Holocaust. They befriend Stingo, the movie's narrator, a young American writer new to New York City. But the happiness of Sophie and Nathan is endangered by her ghosts and his obsessions.

Meryl Streep as Sophie in performance is simply the best performance
ever captured on film. Period. The subtlety and depth with which
reveals Sophie's wounds are simply fascinating. She is both
radiantly beautiful, yet deeply wounded. She is lovely, yet vulnerable
. She is someone who wants love, however,
someone whose pain keeps you from a distance.
This film takes the viewer on a journey emotionally intense. Anyone, but especially
who is a parent, would have to be a rock emotionally
unless absolutely obsessed with this story. As much as I have studied
weighted and the Holocaust, this movie I have been connected to events
most emotional I've been before.
This film, and Ms. Streep's performance, are a gift to humanity.
If the Oscars were to take the best actress ever winner - Janet Gaynor
to Helen Hunt - Meryl Streep will undoubtedly have a good shot to win
against them. She gives a fascinating,
totally credible performance as Sophie, a shy Polish woman who befriends Sting (
Peter MacNicol), as she tells of her past tortured in a concentration camp.
As always, it does not blame his foreign accent, and puts everything in its
performance, better than she ever do. The film itself is very good, too
- that can drag at times (to 2 1 / 2 hours), but definitely worth a look
.
