Kubrik Nabokov's version of the story of an average age of the teacher
self-destructive obsession with a young schoolgirl. Making a film which deals with
juvenile sex was considered impossible in 1962 because of the strict censorship regulations
. Kubrik reached this round by only referring
for sexual encounters and subtle wordplay and symbolism creeps into several scenes
. It also raises the girl from the age of 12 in the novel to 14 in the
movie. Lolita is also rich in Kubrik brand of black humor.

The three central characters in the novel are portrayed all over
properly in the film, James Mason as a professor in love, Shelley Winters as the
suburban widow with pretensions of culture and Sue Lyon as the nymphet
youth. However, Sellars is creepy performance as eccentric
Clare Quilty (a relatively minor character in the book)
who steals the show and, ultimately makes the film. The opening scene (which is
the end of the movie) is a great testament to his talent and versatility
. The scene said gives the film of the same "circular"
used by David Lean in "Brief Encounter".

My favorite moments are; Quilty the re-introduction to the movie in
summer school ball as the cooking chamber through the dance floor and subtly reveals
a look of comic ambivalence on his face as he dances with her lover, Humbert
awkwardly trying to book the only hotel room in the police station
Humbert convention and once again trying to teach the cynical of Lolita
the joy of Edgar Allen Poe poetry.

I thoroughly recommend this movie. My only complaint is the length - the third and final
seemed to drag a bit.
Having read the novel, Nabokov and the two well-known versions of the film,

I believe that the most accurate way to define the relationship is as follows: Lyne's film is more faithful to
literal reading of history, is a measure of Kubrick

more faithful to its spirit and, more importantly, not drowned by

comparisons with the book.

probably what bothers most people who have seen both movies and read the novel is that Kubrick
gives ample room for cynicism, the farce and flout all
major (and minor) characters: ridicules both the
worship, refined and cosmopolitan English and pseudo-liberal and quite sticky
Americans (the cultural and behavioral differentiation
reminding me of Henry James Just the reverse). The boy is here temptress
more realistic seen as a sexy yet irritating vacuous teen
Humbert and the love of it as a noble and right, but incredibly stupid
infatuation (from a head cold as an intellectual him).
Also delicious image of alcoholic beverages and neurotic Shelley Winters, and in particular
of Peter Sellers as a mediocre TV writer wholesale
the American middle class culture. There are a lot of criticism socio ingenious
here.

Adrian Lynne version, which is totally romantic (and are actually trying too hard

to be poetic) may seem more precise about the love story, but it's really
Nabokov's intention to tell a love story like this? I can not really appreciate

how such wonderful novelist may be as clear and open to your reader.

not forget the romance of Humbert feelings of hopelessness towards the
girl, Kubrick does not fall into a simple love story, but explores all
darker consequences of irrationality and does so with
irony and sarcasm (humor is everywhere) but also with a touch of compassion
drama, where appropriate.

We have here a classic, both faithful to the novel and full of
innovations. Lynne
intent is nothing but a lame follower of his two (the literary and film
) predecessors.
